Gerik crash: Hearses carrying bodies of UPSI students expected in Besut this evening
KOTA BARU: The hearse vans carrying the bodies of the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students who died in an accident in Perak early today are expected to arrive in Besut, Terengganu, this evening. Besut district police chief Superintendent Azamuddin Ahmad said the bodies would be sent directly to their respective homes. He said a Terengganu police mobile patrol vehicles would escort the hearse vans from Gerik to Besut. "The UPSI students were from several villages located between Jerteh and Kampung Raja. "Our mobile patrol vehicles escorted 19 hearse vans to Perak this morning to assist in managing the remains of the students who died tragically in the accident. "I was informed that the bodies are expected to be released from the hospitals in Perak soon. "From there, the bodies will be sent directly to their respective homes, not to the Hadhari Mosque," he said. It was reported that 19 hearse vans were deployed to Perak this afternoon. Besut Terengganu Community Welfare Organisation chairman Mohd Azizul Azli Mohd Sani said his group sent six vans, while the Tengku Harith Team from Pasir Puteh, Kelantan, dispatched three. Another van was sent by the Setiu Welfare Organisation. He said Kampung Raja Mosque contributed two vans, while Ummah Care Pasir Puteh, Kelantan; Alor Lintang Mosque; Pengkalan Nyireh Mosque; Air Terjun Mosque; Nurul Iman Mosque; Keruak Mosque; and the Kuala Besut State Assembly Service Office each contributed one van. Earlier this morning, 15 people were killed when the bus they were travelling in collided with a Perodua Alza along Jalan Jeli–Grik near Tasik Banding, Perak. Another 33 people were injured.

Charity organisation dispatches 19 hearses to bring home UPSI victims' remains
JERTIH: Nineteen hearses were dispatched to Perak to transport the remains of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students who were killed in a tragic road accident along the East–West Highway near Tasik Banding, Gerik, early this morning. Pertubuhan Amal Komuniti Besut (Amal Besut), chairman Mohd Azizul Azli Mohd Sani, said six of the hearses were provided by the community charity organisation and one by Amal Setiu. 'The rest came from mosques in Besut, the Kuala Besut state assembly coordinator's office and several non-governmental organisations in Pasir Puteh, Kelantan,' he said when met at Masjid Hadhari today. Mohd Azizul Azli said 46 volunteers were involved in the convoy, including 16 individuals trained in Islamic funeral rites to assist with preparations before the remains were brought home. He added that Amal Besut also brought along complete funeral management supplies, including burial shrouds. 'All funeral and transport services for the victims are provided free of charge by Amal Besut,' he said. Meanwhile, Besut police chief Supt Azamuddin Ahmad said the district police headquarters had been assigned to escort the hearse convoy to and from Perak to ensure a smooth journey.

19 hearses sent to Perak to assist with UPSI crash
BESUT: A total of 19 hearse vans have been deployed to Perak to assist in managing the bodies of the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students who died tragically in an accident early today. Besut Terengganu Community Welfare Organisation chairman Mohd Azizul Azli Mohd Sani said his group sent six vans, while the Tengku Harith Team from Pasir Puteh, Kelantan, dispatched three, and another was sent by the Setiu Welfare Organisation. He added that Kampung Raja Mosque contributed two vans, while Ummah Care Pasir Puteh, Kelantan, Alor Lintang Mosque, Pengkalan Nyireh Mosque, Air Terjun Mosque, Nurul Iman Mosque, Keruak Mosque, and the Kuala Besut State Assembly Service Office contributed a van each. "We gathered in front of the Hadhari Mosque, Besut, at 9.20am before departing for Perak, escorted by police from the Mobile Patrol Vehicle (MPV) at approximately 10.10am. "A quick briefing was held to explain the convoy's route to facilitate an efficient journey to assist in managing the victims' bodies," he said. Earlier this morning, 15 people were killed when the bus they were travelling in collided with a Perodua Alza multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) along Jalan Jeli-Grik near Tasik Banding, Perak. Another 33 people were injured. It is understood that the bus was ferrying UPSI students who were travelling from Jerteh, Terengganu, to the university's main campus. Firefighters had to cut open the rear section of the bus to extricate some of the victims. Federal police confirmed that an investigation was ongoing into the accident.
