Monsoon breaks pattern, enters UP from southern districts, again
The southwest monsoon finally made its first appearance in the state this year on Wednesday. However, it, yet again, defied the trends by entering the state from Jhansi, Lalitpur and Sonbhadra districts in the south for the second year in a row. Last year, it arrived in the state through Lalitpur, which borders Madhya Pradesh, on June 25, as the Arabian Sea branch of monsoon was more active, which was quite unusual. As such, weathermen anticipate that the weather system may make a reentry in two to three days, but this time from the eastern districts of the state. Normally, the monsoon enters UP through Ballia and Gorakhpur from Bihar and Jharkhand. 'The monsoon has advanced into some more parts of North Arabian Sea, remaining parts of Gujarat, some parts of Rajasthan, some more parts of Madhya Pradesh, southern parts of eastern UP, remaining parts of Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand and some more parts of Bihar,' the meteorological centre in Lucknow said in its bulletin. 'The monsoon's northern limit is passing through Barmer, Jodhpur, Jaipur, Gwalior, Khajuraho, Sonbhar and Gaya. Conditions are favourable for its further advancement into some more parts of UP over the next 2 to 3 days,' said Mohd Danish, a senior scientist at the Lucknow Met. Due to a low-pressure area formed around Gangetic West Bengal, it will move further in the west-northwest direction over the next 24 hours, the Met said. Deficit down to 27% Meanwhile, the rain on Wednesday brought down the rain deficit to 27% from 46% on Monday. While Ayodhya received 25.8 mm of rain, Churk and Sultanpur experienced 5.6 mm and 5.2 mm of rain. There is a possibility of a widespread increase in rainfall, along with thunderstorms and lightning, in the state from Thursday and heavy to very heavy rainfall at some places from June 19 to 22. The state forecast is rain/thundershower very likely at many places over West UP and rain/thundershower very likely at most places over East UP. IMD issued a warning of thunderstorms, accompanied by lightning/gusty winds (speed 40-50 kmph) at isolated places in the state. Heavy rain was very likely at isolated places in West UP. Heavy to very heavy rain was very likely at isolated places in East UP. The maximum temperature in all meteorological stations of UP dropped below 40 degrees Celsius. Orai was hottest in the state at 38.4 degrees, followed by 38 degrees each at Fatehgarh and Lakhimpur Kheri. In the state capital, mercury hovered between 36.4 and 26.8 degrees Celsius. On Thursday, the city may experience cloudy skies with a few spells of rain/thundershower with temperatures between 34 and 26 degrees. How monsoon usually progresses in UP: it is scheduled to reach Gorakhpur on June 18; Varanasi, Lucknow, Kanpur and Prayagraj on June 23; Jhansi, Bareilly on June 24; Mainpuri on June 25; Agra and Bijnor on June 27. Several villages cut off after pontoon bridge washes away Several remote villages in Kushinagar and Maharajganj districts were cut off from their tehsil headquarters after a pontoon bridge over the Narayani river washed away on Wednesday due to sharp rise in water levels, reportedly following heavy rainfall and water discharge from Nepal. Over 30,000 residents from 17 revenue villages under Kushinagar's Khadda tehsil and seven revenue villages in Maharajganj have been affected by the disruption. Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Mohd Zafar stated that flood posts had been activated and shelter houses equipped with reserve grains set up. If Nepal discharges more than 3 lakh cusecs of water, the situation may become even more serious,' he said.

U.P. braces for rising temps, light showers to linger
With the monsoon showers losing grip over the region, temperatures are expected to begin a gradual upward trend in Lucknow and across Uttar Pradesh, according to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). The city recorded a maximum of 38.3°C and a minimum of 21.5°C on Thursday. For Friday, the IMD has forecast a slight rise with temperatures expected to hover around 39°C and 24°C. Partly cloudy skies and the possibility of thundery developments are likely, though intense weather activity is not expected. Senior IMD scientist Mohd Danish said, 'Alongside these light showers, the temperature will also remain moderate and rise by a few degrees over the next couple of days.' The cyclonic Western disturbances, which had brought cooler mornings and rainfall to the region, are now receding, making way for drier conditions. However, the IMD has clarified that a heatwave is not yet on the horizon. The yellow alerts previously issued for thunder and lightning across several parts of Uttar Pradesh have now been withdrawn. From May 9 onward, no major shifts in weather or temperature are anticipated, IMD said. 'For the next week, only moderate temperatures are expected across the state, with the spells of rain restricted mostly to the southern part of UP,' Danish added. The IMD has listed around 30 districts in southern Uttar Pradesh that may receive showers on May 10. Statewide weather data reveals Varanasi and Basti reported the highest maximum temperature at 40°C, closely followed by Sultanpur at 39.8°C. Basti also topped the list for the highest minimum temperature at 27°C, with Jhansi and Hamirpur not far behind at 26.7°C and 26.2°C respectively.

Relief from Bay to keep mercury under 40°C in Lko: IMD
After a high of 43 degrees Celsius last week, maximum temperatures in the state capital are likely to stay under 40 degrees Celsius for about a week, if the India Meteorological Department (IMD) is to be believed. This drop will due to Easterly winds from the Bay of Bengal that have provided some respite to several districts. On Monday, the city recorded a maximum temperature of 36.9 degrees, and a minimum temperature of 24 degrees. On Tuesday, mercury is likely to swivel between 38 and 24 degrees even as clear skies may give way to clouds later in the day. 'This is as a result of the Easterly winds blowing in from the Bay of Bengal,' said Mohd Danish, a senior scientist at IMD, Lucknow. 'This will last for about a week,' he said. As for the rest of the state, the weather is most likely to be dry, with strong surface winds (25-35 kmph) over the areas, with no warnings. On Monday, some districts such as Sonbhadra, Mirzapur and others in eastern UP experienced strong winds of around 35 kmph, but no rains, he added. He reiterated that the heatwave was still imminent, and is likely to go up to 45 degrees Celsius, if not more later in the summer. On Monday, five districts hit 40 degrees, namely Lakhimpur Kheri (40), Banda (41.2), Jhansi (42.4), Orai (42.8) and Agra (41.6). The lowest maximum temperatures were recorded at Gorakhpur with 30 degrees Celsius, followed by Ballia (33), Bahraich (33.6), Barabanki (34) and Ghazipur (34). The lowest minimum temperatures were recorded at Kanpur city with 18.4 degrees Celsius, followed by Barabanki (21), Gorakhpur (21.5), Meerut (21.6), and Etawah (21.7). No heatwave warnings have been issued by the IMD for any part of UP for the time being,
