People smuggler killed in crash during MMEA chase, ferrying seven illegals

KOTA BHARU: A tekong darat (people smuggler) was killed when the car he was driving, with seven illegal immigrants from Myanmar, crashed while being pursued by a Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) vehicle on Jalan Bunut Sarang Burung-Kampung Kebakat in Tumpat today. Tumpat Police Chief ACP Mohd Khairi Shafie said the Tumpat District Police Headquarters' Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division received a call at 10 am from Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital (HRPZII), informing them that a man had died following a road accident. 'Investigations found that the accident occurred at about 6.50 am today. The victim, a 34-year-old male labourer, was driving a Proton Perdana from Bunut Sarang Burung, Tumpat, towards Kota Bharu. 'He was believed to be transporting seven passengers — all illegal immigrants aged between 20 and 42 — and pursued by a MMEA vehicle. He attempted to flee towards Kota Bharu via Jalan Kebakat,' he said in a statement today. He said the suspect's vehicle skidded and crashed into a concrete drain in the opposite lane. Mohd Khairi said the suspect, who sustained severe chest injuries, was rushed to HRPZII, where he was pronounced dead at 10 am, while the seven illegal immigrants are receiving treatment at the same hospital.

Police believe man killed in crash after high-speed chase was human trafficker

TUMPAT: Police believe the man who died in a crash while transporting seven illegal immigrants today was a tekong darat, a local term for someone who harbours or transports undocumented migrants. District police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Khairi Shafie said the 34-year-old local man died on the spot in the 6.30am incident. He said the victim was driving a Proton Perdana when the crash occurred at Jalan Bunut Sarang Burung–Jalan Kebakat. "I can only confirm that police are investigating the fatal crash involving the driver of the Proton Perdana, who died after his car plunged into a drain following a high-speed chase with a Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) vehicle. "The victim was travelling with seven foreigners whom we suspect entered Malaysia without proper documents. "All seven foreigners — men aged between 20 and 42 — sustained injuries in the incident," he said. He said police have yet to obtain the identities of the seven foreigners, who are currently receiving treatment at Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital in Kota Baru. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. "The case involving the foreigners is being handled by the MMEA," he said. Earlier, it was reported that a high-speed chase involving a car believed to be carrying at least seven illegal immigrants ended in tragedy when the vehicle plunged into a drain in Wakaf Baru early this morning, killing one person.

Foreigners who tried to bribe cops had overstayed, held expired documents

TUMPAT: Two foreigners who attempted to bribe a police officer with RM220 were found to have overstayed their visas and lacked valid travel documents. District police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Khairi Shafie said the Bangladeshi and Myanmar nationals were detained along Jalan Datuk Keramat after acting suspiciously during a routine patrol around 6.10pm. "Both men, aged between 20 and 30, tried to flee when approached but were caught shortly after," he said in a statement today. During the inspection, one of the suspects allegedly offered cash to the officers. "Despite being warned three times that bribing a public servant is an offence, the suspect handed over RM220 in cash," he said. Checks revealed one suspect had overstayed his visa, while the other had an expired passport. Police also seized UNHCR documents believed to be dubious. The case has been referred to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in Kota Baru for further action. Earlier, Kelantan MACC director Rosli Husain confirmed the duo were arrested at the MACC state headquarters at 1.30am.
