MSNBC Hosts Clarify Their New Roles as the Network Announces The Weekend Co-Hosts

Over the weekend, MSNBC hosts Jonathan Capehart and Ayman Mohyeldin cleared the air surrounding their positions within the network. The two hosts addressed audiences on their respective programs, acknowledging the network's significant programming changes in the past week and announcing their roles as The Weekend co-hosts. At the end of The Saturday Show, Capeheart said, "I want to share some news about this show and about my next assignment here at MSNBC. I've enjoyed bringing you the Saturday Show and The Sunday Show at 6 p.m. ET for just about over a year now, but come spring, I'll be moving back to mornings to co-host The Weekend on MSNBC from 7 a.m. until 10 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays." Capeheart informed viewers that current hosts Symone Sanders Townsend, Michael Steele, and Alicia Menendez will be moving to weeknights at 7 p.m. ET, the timeslot that Joy Reid previously occupied. Mohyeldin also used his on-air opportunity on Saturday night to speak on his new assignment, anchoring an evening edition of The Weekend on Saturday and Sunday at 6 p.m. ET. In addition, Mohyeldin acknowledged Reid and other colleagues who lost hosting opportunities at the network and clarified misinformation surrounding the network as a result of programming changes from MSNBC president Rebecca Kutler. "This week, several headlines claim that my show, this show, had been canceled and that I was leaving the network, and that incorrect news created a wave of commentary and criticism about which voices can be heard and which cannot on mainstream cable news, especially when it comes to coverage of the Middle East." Mohyeldin added, "It is important for me that I set that record straight. I'm not leaving the network." He spoke on his commitment to continue important stories in his new role, saying, "One thing that won't change is my promise to you, the viewers, that I won't stop talking about the difficult stories and challenging topics that others don't cover." MSNBC is moving quickly to fill the co-host role of the morning and evening editions of The Weekend. On Monday, the network announced that Eugene Daniels from Politico and the current White House Correspondent Association president will join Capehart in the mornings. In addition, Jackie Alemany from The Washington Post will join the show, MSNBC announced on Tuesday. Alemany was previously a congressional reporter for the Post, and in addition to her cohosting duties, she will also serve as MSNBC's Washington correspondent. Daniels and Alemany's additions to The Weekend were announced on Morning Joe on Monday and Tuesday, respectively.

MSNBC canceling Ayman Mohyeldin's show amid network reshuffling

MSNBC host Ayman Mohyeldin is losing his show after 14 years at the network, which is undergoing a programming shake up, according to a source familiar with the situation. The host's staff learned on Monday that the last episode of Ayman Mohyeldin Reports is likely to air on 20 April. MSNBC could not immediately be reached for comment. Mohyeldin has hosted several shows at MSNBC, including Morning Joe First Look, an early morning pre-show for one of the network's flagship shows. In 2021, his namesake show was given a primetime weekend evening slot. The anchor also served as a correspondent for NBC in Gaza during a monthlong conflict in 2014, where he received praise from media critics for coverage that departed from 'the standard pro-Israel coverage that dominates establishment American press coverage'. The cancelation comes amid an ongoing reshuffling at MSNBC. Earlier this week, it was announced that MSNBC had canceled the longstanding anchor Joy Reid's show The ReidOut. The change reportedly comes as a result of a reshuffling by the network's new president, Rebecca Kutler, who took over the role in February. Kutler, who was previously MSNBC's senior vice-president for content strategy, succeeds former MSNBC president Rashida Jones. Chuck Todd, a prominent anchor and former host of Meet The Press, announced in January that he was leaving NBC after 18 years. The announcement followed Todd's pushback against NBC's decision to hire Ronna McDaniel, the former Republican National Committee chairperson during Donald Trump's first presidency, in March 2024. McDaniel was eventually removed from her position. In November of last year, Morning Joe hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski faced backlash after meeting with Trump to discuss 'a new approach' after his election to a second presidency. Also in November, Comcast announced plans to spin off several cable networks, including MSNBC, as the TV networks faced declining ratings, which only further declined following election fatigue.
