New Yorkers vie for $200K grants to build NYC's future
BROOKLYN, N.Y. (PIX11) — From education, healthcare, mental wellness, and the arts, two dozen New Yorkers are vying for $200,000 in grants to build New York City's future. Barry Cooper, one of the finalists, is recognized as a first responder in creating healing spaces and providing mental health programs for young men of color in his neighborhood. More Local News Cooper grew up in Bedford-Stuyvesant. With two sisters, Cooper says his mom gave him the nickname 'the protector.' Now he wants to help his community. Cooper is the executive and founder of The B.R.O. Experience Foundation, an organization that creates authentic and connected spaces for young men in Bed Stuy. Cooper also wrote a book called the Provider Guide for co-parenting dads, available on Amazon. Cooper says it's the perfect gift for Father's Day. After five years of trying, Cooper is one of 14 finalists chosen out of thousands and is now in the running to receive the David Prize, supported by the Walentas Foundation. Erika Augustine is the founding executive director of the David Prize. It awards five New Yorkers with $200,000 each year, no strings attached. More Monica Makes It Happen Right now, Augustine's team is working with all of the finalists to prepare for a final interview. Winners will be announced in September. 3 Harlem community champions are making things happen in their communities
NEW YORK (PIX11) – Three Harlem heroes are really making things happen in their communities. PIX11's Monica Morales has been following their incredible work in their neighborhoods for years. More Local News She's a TV radio host, author, and actress. Bevy Smith will appear on the following Monica Makes It Happen TV show, which airs Monday, March 31, at 4:30 p.m. Smith wants to share what she has learned with others. Bevy has an upcoming brunch/workshop helping to inspire people to be their best selves. It's called 'Life With Vision/Dining With Bevy' on March 29th in NYC. Silicon Harlem is celebrating 12 years of closing the digital divide, and it is now expanding. Fresh off his highly successful tech conference, Silicon Harlem Clayton Banks CEO says he's only getting started. Banks have already helped thousands of young people, donated over 5,000 computers to the community, brought free technology programs, and provided access to the neighborhood. He's also launched a new cyber security initiative. The historic Harlem School of the Arts Media and Design Department has expanded its programming to include a gaming component, teaching young people to become creators. Leadership summit held at Metropolitan College of New York
NEW YORK (PIX11) – A special leadership summit, focusing on empowering current and future leaders to thrive and collaborate to meet their full potential in business, was held on Friday at the Metropolitan College of New York. Students got a chance to rub elbows with leaders from the finance world to healthcare, to top CEOs from corporate America and academia. More: Latest News from Around the Tri-State Dr. Hamilton Raymond, the college's vice president, and Jarvis Harper were both in attendance. Raymond, Harper's mentor, called him a rising star. Last month, Metropolitan College of New York President Dr. Charles Gibbs was on Monica Makes It Happen to unveil a partnership with New York City, to help city workers get free college tuition. More Local News In addition, 70-year-old Margie Gonzalez, from the Upper West Side, started an exercise class in what used to be a storage room last September. She only had three pieces of equipment then. She's now started a new class called 'Sit to be Fit,' which helps circulation for older New Yorkers. Hip-hop artist Sweet Tee aids community members battling addiction
NEW YORK (PIX11) – She's a legendary hip-hop artist from Hollis, Queens. Now, Sweet Tee is working on a new album and sharing a side of herself that you may not know with PIX11's Monica Morales. More Local News She is working in the community, helping those struggling with addiction to get second chances. Sweet Tee is considered one of the founding hip-hop queens from Hollis Queens. She broke through barriers and became a superstar. Born Toi Crystal Jackson, she is known professionally as Sweet Tee. In the 1980s, she had several hits, including 'It's My Beat' and 'Teatime.' Her passion now is helping people suffering from addiction. One of her biggest fans is Secretary of State Walter Mosley. Sweet Tee, Mosley, and DJ Spigg were guests on the February Monica Makes It Happen TV show. She will become a licensed social worker in May.
