The big finish: podcasts that really stick the landing
Headphones are essential for this atmospheric audio drama from Jordan Peele's Monkeypaw Productions, released in 2022 and told over 12 parts. Tracy Letts plays radio shock jock Rick Egan, who casually, carelessly stirs up racial tensions in the post-9/11 US. Fast forward eight years, and Rick is persona non grata in the industry, a deadbeat dad and – on top of all that – has become the target of an evil parasitic force called the Blank (voiced by Taran Killam), in a series that offers thrills and chills right to the end. Megan Bhari was a teenager who – despite apparent ill health – poured her energy into founding a charity for sick children that was supported by the likes of One Direction. But, astoundingly, web sleuths alleged that Bhari was faking cancer – even claiming that she had gone to Disney World when she was supposed to be undergoing treatment. Sensitively handling its hugely tricky subject matter, Jamie Bartlett's 2023 BBC series keeps up its rigorous investigation of the Believe in Magic charity all the way to its final chapter, with big revelations about Bhari and her family. This pod from the FT and Pushkin is the sort of series that lodges itself deep in your brain after listening. First released in 2022, it offers a forensic look at the world of online porn, from the surprising role of Visa and Mastercard to what performers really think of their tech overloads, and the ascent of OnlyFans. It also seeks to answer a simple but seemingly unknowable question: who is PornHub's secretive owner? Gladly, Patricia Nilsson and Alex Barker find this out – and much more besides. Released earlier this year, this series hosted by journalist Nicky Anderson for the British podcast outfit Stak delves into the elite New York City Ballet, where allegations of abuse and toxicity have festered over the decades – even leading to a headline-grabbing lawsuit. Its greatest strength is its candid accounts from former members of the company – which continue right to the last episode, when a newly retired dancer unpacks the isolation and mental strain she suffered. Funded in part by Nasa, Quantum Quest was an ambitious, educational sci-fi animation with an enviable voice cast that included Samuel L Jackson, Mark Hamill and Sandra Oh. Why, then, did the film barely see the light of day, showing in one Kentucky cinema for six months in 2011 before all traces of it were scrubbed from existence? This indie pod explores all the theories, before getting some solid answers about how such a starry project ended up on the scrapheap.

‘HIM' Sports Horror Depicts Marlon Wayans As Pro QB With A Dark Secret
Jordan Peele is continuing to innovate the horror genre by producing films that platform Black actors and tell stories in a realm where they're either rarely seen or offed far too quickly. HIM , produced by Peele, stars Marlon Wayans and Tyriq Withers, examines the high cost of fame and the sacrifices some would make to obtain greatness. Produced by Jordan Peele's Monkeypaw Productions, HIM stars Wayans as Isaiah White, a star professional quarterback in his waning years who mentors rising quarterback Cameron Cade, played by Withers, who some might remember from the 'Rich Wigga, Poor Wigga' episode of Atlanta from show creator Donald Glover. In a trailer for HIM delivered last Friday (April 18), White is the top quarterback of his team and takes in Cade to train him in an isolated compound. What Cade discovers in his journey is that the price of sports excellence will cost him dearly, and it appears White is attempting to cast his curse onto his young protege. HIM , which was initially titled GOAT , is directed by Justin Tipping, who was the director and writer for 2016's Kicks and was the director and producer for the television show Flatbush Misdemeanors , among other works. The film is slated for a September 19 release. Check out the trailer below. — Photo: Universal Pictures / HIM SEE ALSO 'HIM' Sports Horror Depicts Marlon Wayans As Pro QB With A Dark Secret was originally published on

'Bro… it's different,' but is it? Jordan Peele's horror Him trailer out now, starring Marlon Wayans
Marlon Wayans stars alongside rising actor Tyriq Withers in the trailer for Him, a horror movie produced by Jordan Peele. The film, directed by Justin Tipping, will hit theaters on September 19, 2025. It features Wayans as a seasoned quarterback who takes an up-and-coming football star under his wing. However, the training goes far beyond physical drills, as Wayans' character, Isaiah White, pushes Withers' character, Cameron Cade, into disturbing territory. The film follows Cade, a rising star quarterback, who suffers a potentially career-ending injury just before football's scouting combine. In his moment of despair, he is offered a lifeline by his idol, Isaiah White, an eight-time championship-winning quarterback. White invites Cade to train at his isolated compound, alongside his influencer wife, Elsie White (played by Julia Fox). But what begins as a mentor-mentee relationship quickly turns dark, as White's methods become increasingly unsettling, forcing Cade to question the true cost of success. The first trailer teases the film's chilling elements, featuring scenes of ritualistic violence and cryptic dialogue, including White's instruction to Cade: 'Talent is how hard you're willing to work... you're going to have to ask yourself, 'What am I willing to sacrifice?'' Wayans posted the trailer on Instagram, cryptically captioning it, 'Bro… it's different,' further piquing audience curiosity. The film was initially titled GOAT but was rebranded to Him, emphasizing its shift into darker horror territory. Wayans, who also co-wrote the screenplay, teased the film's unsettling nature during its debut at CinemaCon, likening it to a 1990s sports drama before Withers quickly corrected him, calling it something 'that burrows under the skin.' Produced by Peele under his Monkeypaw Productions banner, Him marks another foray into unique horror storytelling, following Peele's success with films like Get Out and Us.
