Evacuation order issued for some residents due to Inn Fire in Mono County
( — Residents in Mono County were asked to evacuate their homes on May 23 after a lawful order was issued due to the Inn Fire, which posed an immediate threat to life. Caltrans authorities stated they closed U.S. 395 from Lee Vining to Highway 167 because of the brush fire. Drivers were urged to detour around the closure. Southbound traffic will take Highway 167, while northbound traffic will use U.S. 6. The following locations served as evacuation shelters: Bridgeport Memorial Hall, located at 73 North School Street in Bridgeport Lee Vining Community Center, found at 296 Mattly Ave in Lee Vining. On Friday, fire officials reported the fire had reached 640 acres with 0% containment. By Sunday morning, the Nevada Type Three Incident Management Team Four announced that firefighters on the Inn Fire continued to make progress. The fire is now 15% contained, with efforts concentrated along the east side of Highway 395. On the northern edge of the fire, containment efforts began where the completed dozer line extends from the highway to the Mono Vista Spring area. This area is supported by ongoing construction and hose-laying operations to extinguish heat and create a secure perimeter, according to fire officials. On May 24, the Mono County Sheriff's Office downgraded its evacuation order from mandatory to advisory, allowing residents of Mono City and the Lundy area to return home, authorities reported. Power has been restored to affected communities. Officials reopened Highway 395 at around 8 p.m. on Saturday with one-way traffic control between Lee Vining and State Route 167 during the hours of 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Drivers are advised to use caution and be on the lookout for fire personnel and equipment working in the area. 'Fire behavior has been minimal, with creeping and smoldering observed throughout much of the day,' said fire authorities. 'While growth has slowed, smoke may still be visible, especially during warmer afternoon hours. Crews continue to build and reinforce the fireline, working in steep and rugged terrain to secure the fire's edge and perform mop-up operations.' Firefighters stated that there is still significant work ahead to increase containment in the area. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
