Woman buys $5 scratch-off in Maryland and wins big. ‘Couldn't calculate it all'

A woman bought a $5 scratch-off and was left 'overwhelmed' after checking it with her husband, Maryland officials said. The state employee usually plays Keno in addition to scratch-offs and bought a 'handful of them' in Fallston, according to a May 30 news release by the Maryland Lottery. She had no idea one of the Monopoly X20 games she bought would be carrying a $50,000 prize, officials said. The Baltimore County woman usually checks her ticket by scanning the barcode but decided she'd actually scratch it this time, officials said. 'I didn't cheat this time and did it the long way,' she told lottery officials. At first, she scratched the winning numbers, then decided to check her own, officials said. 'I scratched under that 26 and saw $5,000, and thought 'OK, I've won something',' she said in the release. 'Then there was another $5,000 and another. … I just couldn't calculate it all.' That's when she asked her husband for help with the math and his eyes grew 'big,' officials said. The lucky winner said she doesn't have any concrete plans for the money other than to save it, officials said. Fallston is about a 20-mile drive northeast from Baltimore.

Mom walks to grocery store for some exercise — and wins life-changing lottery prize

A mother's stroll to the grocery store for some exercise ended in a life–changing lottery win in Maryland, officials said. She has been playing the lottery since she moved there a few years ago, officials said in a March 20 news release. She selects tickets based on their corresponding number on the display case, 'particularly drawn to 4, 7, and 13, which she considers her lucky numbers,' officials said. The strategy finally paid off with a $50,000 win. The Rockville woman had walked to her local food store to get some exercise that day and picked up a Monopoly X20 scratch–off that she scratched right there in the store. 'I scanned it and knew I won something, but I wasn't sure how much,' she told officials. 'When I scanned it again and saw $50,000, my heart was racing — I really couldn't believe my eyes!' She rushed home to share the news with her kids. 'Her daughter, initially skeptical and suspecting a prank, rushed over to confirm the win,' officials said. 'A quick scan using the Maryland Lottery app confirmed the prize. No trick, just a dream come true.' The mom shared her 'practical' plans for the prize: 'I never thought I'd have this much money at my disposal, so the smartest thing is to save it,' she said. Rockville is about a 20-mile drive northwest of Washington D.C.
