French Film Festival Aotearoa 2025 comes to Waikato
Alliance Française Hamilton president and Le Rendez-Vous Samantha Wiria said the creperie wanted to team up with Lido during the festival so moviegoers could have 'a full French experience'. The creperie is also changing its operating hours and offering discounts to festivalgoers who can provide a ticket when they order. 'People can come before or after [watching a film] to the creperie.' Wiria said the taste of authentic French food would also help to extend the atmosphere of the festival, the feeling of the 'French moment'. 'I think that the French cinema has something special,' Wiria said. 'Each time the French festival has been here, the quality of the movies is very high. 'It's always a special period of the year.' Alliance Française Hamilton secretary Catherine Neazor Brady said she was most looking forward to seeing the festival's opening night picture Monsieur Aznavour. 'He sang really famous songs like La Boheme which are all going to be in the movie.' Neazor Brady said the film, which tells the story of Charles Aznavour, France's Frank Sinatra, was a must for anyone who liked musical biopics. Alliance Française Hamilton centre manager Marie-Christine Richard said Aznavour was 'iconic'. 'He has been a pillar representing what the French song is all about. So it's very classic.' Richard said audiences would enjoy French cinema's emphasis on soul, story and history. 'I think that people are really missing a good story.' She said festivalgoers would also leave the theatre with good conversation. 'The endings are very puzzling. They open the possibility for reflection because sometimes French cinema is very ambiguous.' Which French Film Festival movie should I see? The Alliance Française Hamilton team have recommended these titles. How to Make a Killing – a dark comedy set against spectacular scenery for people who are not very familiar with the French language. The Count of Monte Cristo – a critically acclaimed adaptation of Alexandre Dumas' epic tale of revenge and redemption. French Film Festival Aotearoa Celebrates Its 19th Year With Another Magnifique Programme Announcement
New Zealand's biggest film festival is back. The French Film Festival Aotearoa returns from May 28, bringing the magic of French cinema to audiences across 24 towns and cities - including exciting new additions Waiheke Island, Cambridge, Tākaka, and Queenstown. Coinciding with the 80th anniversary of diplomatic relations between France and New Zealand, the French Government recently awarded the Festival's owner, Simon Werry, with the title of Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres. The award recognises significant contribution to the development of arts, music and literature, an honour besieged on only a handful of New Zealanders including Sir Peter Jackson, Witi Ihimaera and Dame Fiona Kidman. The 2025 edition features 23 hand-selected films, showcasing the very best of contemporary French cinema - from epic blockbusters and Cannes favourites to dramas, romances and quirky comedies. Festival Highlights Include: The Count of Monte Cristo – a rip-roaring adaptation of Alexandre Dumas' timeless classic, packed with action and adventure. Jane Austen Wrecked My Life - A charming love letter to the beloved author, this story follows a solitary bookseller chasing her dream of becoming a writer — a heartfelt nod to Jane Austen in the year marking her 250th birthday. Beating Hearts – a bold and emotional blockbuster following star-crossed lovers that's taken French box offices by storm. Boléro – a visually stunning film following Maurice Ravel's journey to create the iconic music piece, set against the backdrop of 1920s Paris. My Brother's Band – a sensation at Cannes and one of France's biggest box office films of the year, two very different siblings separated by fate are reunited by their love of music. Holy Cow – a must-see for cheese lovers, this delightful Cannes selection dives into France's passion for fromage with warmth and humour. Monsieur Aznavour - a lavish portrayal of the life and career of singer Charles Aznavour.
