Second man accused of kidnapping, torturing Italian tourist in NYC apartment

(PIX11) — A second suspect is accused of kidnapping and torturing an Italian tourist for several weeks in a swanky Manhattan townhouse, police said. More Local News Florida resident William Duplessie, 33, turned himself in Tuesday morning and was charged with assault, kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment, and criminal possession of a firearm, according to the NYPD. On Friday, his accomplice, John Woeltz, 37, was arrested at the scene after the 28-year-old cryptocurrency millionaire escaped the apartment near Prince and Mulberry streets in SoHo. The suspects wanted the password to the tourist's Bitcoin account, according to the criminal complaint. Prosecutors said the defendants allegedly bound and beat the victim several times, including hitting him in the head with a gun and using electric wires to shock him for three weeks in the eight-bedroom apartment. The suspects allegedly used a saw to cut the man's leg, urinated on him, and forced him to smoke crack cocaine by holding him down or forcing a pipe into his mouth, according to court documents. The victim also had an Air Tag tied around his neck. On the morning he escaped, the tourist was carried to the top of the stairs and hung over the ledge and told he would die if he didn't give up the Bitcoin password, prosecutors said. The tourist told the defendants he would give them access to the account and ran out of the apartment when Woeltz went to get the victim's laptop, according to the complaint. The man was shoeless and bloody when he flagged a traffic agent, who then called 911. The tourist was taken to the hospital with a laceration to his face, wrist injuries from being bound, and other injuries to his head and body, authorities said. Woeltz was charged with assault, kidnapping, and unlawful imprisonment after officers raided the townhouse Friday. The suspect was held without bail after his arraignment. Duplessie's arraignment was pending on Tuesday. Their attorneys could not immediately be reached. Pecking House in Brooklyn forced to close for ‘foreseeable future'
PROSPECT HEIGHT, Brooklyn (PIX11) — A popular eatery that recently expanded to Brooklyn may be forced to close for good. Pecking House, a restaurant known for its Sichuan chili country fried chicken, closed its location in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn in early May because of mandated construction. The team shared the news in an email to subscribers on Tuesday. More Local News 'It's been both a long time coming and incredibly unexpected. Such is life, and such is the nature of the world of food, especially these days,' the email read. The Queens-born restaurant expanded to Brooklyn in September 2022 and later to Chinatown. Restaurant owners say construction wasn't required at the time they moved into 244 Flatbush Ave but things have since changed. More: Latest News from Around the Tri-State The building owner needed full access to the Pecking House basement to complete the mandated construction, the restaurant's team said. As a result, they made way for the construction team but lost a space to prep food, according to the email. PIX11 reached out to the building owner for a statement but did not hear back at the time of publishing. More Brooklyn News 'Shutting down a restaurant, even temporarily, launches a domino effect that swiftly becomes an avalanche,' the email said. 'It takes time and a lot of coordination – and a lot of money – to both end and start again all the things that keep a restaurant churning.' While it's possible the store could reopen in a month or two if construction goes as planned, the restaurant also faces the challenge of having to find and hire an entirely new team to reopen, representatives explained. 'Maybe there are still a lot of questions, but we're still figuring out a lot of answers. We will keep you updated as we figure them out,' the team said. In the meantime, Pecking House says they will focus on their Chinatown location for the time being. The Manhattan store will also close temporarily on Wednesday and Thursday to prepare for the launch of a new menu on Friday. Duties include preparing, developing, and distributing internal communications within the university. Additional responsibilities involve building webpages and delivering mobile push notifications. NYU also currently requires an electrician. The hourly wage for this position is $49.18, based on collective bargaining contracts, according to the job listing. Job duties include troubleshooting, installing, replacing, repairing, and upgrading various electrical systems, equipment, and lighting fixtures. The institution also seeks a registered nurse. According to the job listing, the expected salary for the job is $86,635 and may reach upwards of $105,888. The nurse hired will, according to established standards and medical ethics, provide direct, individualized patient care and education to a diverse university community. According to the listing, the expected starting salary for this position is $150,000 and may reach up to USD $190,000. Diddy turns down plea deal, will place fate in jury hands: ‘His image is international'
NEW YORK (PIX11) – One of the most highly anticipated trials of the year gets underway this Monday in Lower Manhattan. Sean 'Diddy' Combs, once a celebrated Bad Boy Records mogul, now sits behind bars in Brooklyn. The Harlem-born entertainer is accused of racketeering and sex trafficking—charges that could result in a life sentence. More Local News In his final court appearance before the trial, it was revealed that Combs turned down a plea deal and will instead place his fate in the hands of a jury of his peers. For Combs, the first Monday in May meant dressing to impress at the Met Gala. But this year, the first Monday in May will mark the start of his federal sex trafficking trial. His wardrobe has already been selected—and it won't include a prison jumpsuit. Instead, the court is allowing him to wear up to five button-down shirts, pants, sweaters, socks, and shoes without laces, in an effort to maintain an impartial appearance before the jury. 'His image, power, wealth, influence is on an international scale,' said entertainment attorney Yohayra Azcona. PIX11 News got a look at the proposed questions for the jury selection process. From a pool of 150 people, attorneys will choose 12 jurors and six alternates for the expected eight-week trial. 'Juries are humans that have biases that subconsciously play a role,' Azcona added. That's why both sides will have input when asking prospective jurors about their views on sex, assault, infidelity, prostitution, drugs, and hip-hop. The defense also wants to explore whether personal experiences and opinions could impact a juror's ability to remain impartial. At a recent hearing, Combs' attorney likened his client to a 'swinger,' offering a possible glimpse into the defense's strategy—something prosecutors may seize upon. 'When did content turn to coercion? Where did the abuse happen?' Azcona asked. 'The prosecution will have to pinpoint where things took a turn.' Celebrity lawyer Mark Geragos, who once represented Michael Jackson, will now watch his daughter, Teny Geragos, attempt to secure an acquittal for Combs. 'I think you'll see witness after witness say, 'I never went to police and didn't do anything in this case, or in Cassie's case, until the eve of the Adult Survivors Act [deadline],'' Mark Geragos told NewsNation's Chris Cuomo, Friday night. Bird Flu public health risk is low, despite widespread in all 50 U.S. States: CDC
NEW YORK (PIX11) – Reports of a Bird flu pandemic have been circulating online after a viewpoint was published in a scientific journal Wednesday. Bird Flu has been detected in all 50 U.S. States and Puerto Rico, but officials are stressing that the current health risk to the public is low, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. More Local News 'H5 bird flu is widespread in wild birds worldwide and is causing outbreaks in poultry and U.S. dairy cows with several recent human cases in U.S. dairy and poultry workers,' read an entry on the CDC's website. 'While the current public health risk is low, CDC is watching the situation carefully and working with states to monitor people with animal exposures. Although the risk to the public may be considered low, avian flu continues to devastate poultry and dairy farms. A recent outbreak was detected on Wednesday, affecting a commercial farm in South Dakota and a flock of 700,000 birds. Over 100 species of North American wild birds – including ducks, geese, gulls, owls, eagles, and others – have been infected with bird flu. At the beginning of the year, a farm in Long Island had to euthanize over 100,000 birds. Live poultry markets were ordered to close in New York City, Westchester, and Long Island in February. Bird flu outbreaks were also cited as the primary cause of egg price spikes in January and February after more than 30 million egg-laying chickens were killed to prevent the spread of the disease. Although bird flu does not usually affect people, according to the CDC, a number of cases have been reported in humans.
