Supermarket giants Morrisons planning Lockerbie convenience store
An application for a building in the town's High Street to be turned into a Morrisons Daily has been approved by the council. Supermarket giants Morrisons are planning to open a convenience store in Lockerbie. An application for a building in the town's High Street to be turned into a Morrisons Daily has been approved by the council. That will see a former newsagents shop beside the town hall converted into a convenience store. A heritage and access statement in support of the application from Dhiren Pancholi says the property has been empty for a number of years and is an 'eyesore' on the High Street. The application was to change the shop front – including replacing windows and signs – and make internal alterations, with the shop part of a listed building. Morrisons closing final of 17 stores today in major blow for shoppers
The supermarket closed 16 of its Morrisons Daily convenience stores last month and now its branch in Haxby is shutting today Morrisons is set to close the final of 17 stores today as part of its major restructure plans. The supermarket closed 16 of its Morrisons Daily convenience stores last month and now its branch in Haxby is shutting today. It isn't just Morrisons Daily stores that have been impacted. The supermarket also announced plans to shut 52 of its in-store cafés, all 18 of its market kitchens, 13 florists, 35 meat counters, 35 fish counters and four pharmacies. Morrisons said a "wide-ranging review" found these services were not cost-effective. At the time, the supermarket said most employees affected by these changes will be offered alternative roles elsewhere in the company - however, 365 people were still put at risk of redundancy. The shake-up is also partly to "help mitigate recent significant cost increases" including an increase in employers' National Insurance and the minimum wage. Rami Baitiéh, Chief Executive of Morrisons, said at the time of the announcement: 'The changes we are announcing today are a necessary part of our plans to renew and reinvigorate Morrisons and enable us to focus our investment into the areas that customers really value and that can play a full part in our growth. 'Morrisons Cafés are rightly famous for their great quality well-priced food, their place in the local community and their appealing mix of traditional favourites alongside exciting new dishes. 'In most locations the Morrisons Café has a bright future, but a minority have specific local challenges and in those locations, regrettably, closure and re-allocation of the space is the only sensible option. 'Market Street is a beacon of differentiation for Morrisons and we remain committed to it. But as we modernise we are making some necessary changes to the areas of the model which are simply uneconomic. 'In some stores where we are closing counters or Cafés, we plan to work with third parties to provide a relevant specialist offer. Although these changes are relatively small in the context of the overall scale of the Morrisons business, we do not take lightly the disruption and uncertainty they will cause to some of our colleagues.' It comes after Morrisons axed two of its loyalty scheme offers - leaving shoppers furious. The supermarket previously ran Fish Fridays and Steak Saturdays promotions which gave More Card customers 20% off fish and steak from its Market Street counters. Hamilton shoplifter brandished scissors and lunged at assistant who tried to stop her
Melissa McKee threatened staff in another Hamilton store on the same day, the town's sheriff court was told. A shoplifter brandished scissors and lunged at an assistant who tried to stop her. Melissa McKee threatened staff in another Hamilton store on the same day, the town's sheriff court was told. McKee, 46, admitted stealing groceries and assaulting a male employee at Morrisons Daily in Almada Street on New Year's Day. Lewis Devoy, prosecuting, said the assistant spotted her stuffing cheese, butter and other items into her bag and walk towards the door. The fiscal stated: "He approached and pulled at the bag but the accused shouted 'I'm not stealing. Do you want to see stealing?' "She then grabbed bottles of washing up liquid and laundry pods, placing them in her bag along with a quantity of chocolate bars. "The assistant moved towards her again but McKee pulled scissors from her pocket and lunged at him. "He backed off immediately and she shouted something and made off. "She was traced by CCTV operators in Clydesdale Street. The scissors and a bag of groceries valued at £89 were recovered." McKee also admitted threatening or abusive behaviour at Tesco Express, Hillhouse Road, two hours before the Morrisons incident. A member of staff had asked her to leave and she responded by picking up a crate of cider. Mr Devoy told the court: "She put her hand in her pocket and told two employees she had a pair of scissors and needles. "This caused significant alarm to the staff members who backed off. "The accused barged past towards the exit doors but dropped the cider. "One of the employees locked the door as McKee left. The accused then turned, shouted, swore and kicked the door before making off." Defence agent Scott Jones said McKee was at a "low ebb" at the time. She was in temporary homeless accommodation and was abusing substances, but he conceded: "Her behaviour was inexcusable." Mr Jones said his client has been in custody since her arrest in January, and is making use of health services in prison. She was not seeking a social work supervision order as an alternative to a prison sentence. Sheriff John Speir said it was a "sad and tragic" case and he wanted to help McKee, but given her attitude there was no alternative to custody. McKee was jailed for 12 months, backdated to January 3. *Don't miss the latest headlines from around Lanarkshire. Sign up to our newsletters here.

Morrisons shoppers 'not happy' as it axes popular loyalty scheme deal
The supermarket previously ran Fish Fridays and Steak Saturdays promotions which gave More Card customers 20% off fish and steak from its Market Street counters Morrisons has axed two of its loyalty scheme offers - leaving shoppers furious. The supermarket previously ran Fish Fridays and Steak Saturdays promotions which gave More Card customers 20% off fish and steak from its Market Street counters. However, these offers have recently been pulled - with Morrisons adding 125 fish and steak products to its three for £10 deal instead. Shoppers have been reacting to the news on social media. One person commented on Morrisons' Facebook page: 'You have finished with 20% off the fish Friday and Steak Saturday not happy.' In a separate Reddit post, another said: 'Are Morrisons stopping the 20% Fish Fridays and Steak Saturdays? Manager last week told me they were stopping it, offers no longer showing on the app!' A spokesperson from Morrisons told The Sun: 'Market street is an important part of Morrisons and we are working hard to maintain what customers really want, modernising our proposition and maintaining what is in our DNA as a company.' It comes after Morrisons announced it is closing 35 meat counters, along with 35 of its fish counters. The supermarket is also getting rid of 52 in-store cafes, all 18 of its Market Kitchens, 13 florists and four pharmacies. Morrisons also closed 16 of its Morrisons Daily convenience stores last month, with a final branch in Haxby to shut on May 14. Morrisons said a "wide-ranging review" found these services were not cost-effective. The supermarket is also looking to "mitigate recent significant cost increases" including an increase in employers' National Insurance and the minimum wage. The majority of employees affected by these changes are being offered alternative roles elsewhere in the company, but the grocer confirmed there will be around 365 jobs at risk of redundancy. But in better news, Morrisons has announced that More Card customers can now donate loyalty points to the charity Marie Curie. The points can be donated in multiples of 1,000 points, which is the equivalent of £1, through the More Card App or More website. Each donation will be converted into a monetary value and transferred to Marie Curie. Morrisons More members earn five More points on products when they scan their card in-store or online. Once a customer has reached 5,000 points, they receive a Morrisons Fiver. This is worth £5 which can be redeemed on a future shop, in-store or online. Morrisons More also offers personalised discounts for shoppers. Morrisons has confirmed it will be rolling its More loyalty scheme into all of its franchised stores this year, including its Morrisons Daily sites.
