Reeves Co kidnapping suspect, missing 14-year-old found in San Antonio
REEVES COUNTY, Texas (KMID/KPEJ)- The Reeves County Sheriff's Office has arrested one person in connection with the disappearance of a 14-year-old child who left home as a runaway in late February. Trent Michael Furry has been charged with Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child, a first-degree felony, Injury to a Child, a first-degree felony, and Aggravated Kidnapping Sexual Abuse, a first-degree felony.
According to RCSO, on March 1, deputies received a call about a 14-year-old runaway who went missing in late February. Investigators conducted a welfare check at the teen's home in Pecos and learned from her legal guardian that the girl had been picked up by an unknown man she'd met online in the early morning hours of February 24. The Reeves SO Criminal Investigation Division assisted in the investigation and utilize forensic tools to execute exigent phone pings, which placed the teen in a motel in San Antonio.
RCSO said the San Antonio Police Department was contacted, and SAPD officers conducted a welfare check at a Motel 6 Six Flags in San Antonio but were unable to locate the juvenile or the suspect, who'd been identified as Furry, 36, of Vista, California.
Reeves SO CID then filed an exigent request for the suspect's social media accounts which showed other locations near Motel 6 Six Flags in San Antonio. Once more phone pings in same area were confirmed, investigators requested assistance from Texas Department of Public Safety CID to assist in locating the juvenile, and they executed a secondary welfare check at Motel 6 Six Flags in San Antonio, where they found the suspect's vehicle.
Investigators eventually found Furry, and the teen, and the suspect was taken into custody without incident. The defendant was initially taken to the Bexar County Jail in San Antonio but has since been extradited to Reeves County and is currently being held in Reeves County Jail on three First-Degree Felony charges with a combined Bond amount of $300,000.
'Thanks to the networking and cooperation between Law Enforcement agencies mainly San Antonio PD and Texas DPS CID, the juvenile was located and taken to safety. The Flock camera system approved through Commissioner's Court last year and purchased by the Sheriff's Office was instrumental in tracking the suspect from California into Pecos, Texas and then on to San Antonio once a license plate was obtained by Investigators,' RCSO said in a statement. 'The Sheriff's Office did not receive the report of the missing juvenile until five days after the juvenile went missing or the suspect and missing juvenile may have been found sooner by using the Flock Camera System and investigative techniques from Reeves SO CID. The Sheriff's Office would like to remind parents to monitor their child's social media traffic to avoid incidents like these involving kidnapping and possible human trafficking.'
