Cape Town City slow out of the blocks in race to save PSL status

The PSL play-offs are under way, with three sides jostling for a place in the Betway Premiership next season. City finished 15th in the Premiership and have a chance to rescue their elite league status. Casric Stars are the third contestants in the mini-league, which runs until 30 June. Cape Town City's campaign to save their Betway Premiership status started on a slow note when they were held to a goalless draw by Orbit College at the PSL promotion/relegation play-offs in the Mother City on Saturday. City head coach Diogo Peral admitted during a post-match interview that a draw at home is not good enough. The match was played at the DHL Stadium in Cape Town. The previous play-offs showed that, at most, two wins and anything between seven and 10 points guaranteed a ticket to the Premiership. For Orbit, the match was their second goalless stalemate after their match against Casric Stars in the opening match. 🎙 ℂ𝕆𝔸ℂℍ'𝕊 ℝ𝔼𝔸ℂ𝕋𝕀𝕆ℕ 🎙 Cape Town City coach Diogo Peral reflecting on their performance after their match against Orbit College! #SABCSportFootball #PSLPromotionPlayOffs — SABC Sport (@SABC_Sport) June 14, 2025 The Citizens are in the three-team tournament after finishing 15th in the Betway Premiership. Orbit and Stars finished second and third, respectively, in the Motsepe Foundation Championship. The standings Orbit lead the play-offs log with two points after two matches, while City and Casric have a point each. Each side will play home and away against the other. The team that tops the play-offs table will gain the Premiership slot. In the game on Saturday, City and Orbit had equal chances to score, but failed to capitalise. City were denied by a crossbar and the brilliance of Orbit goalkeeper, Halalisani Moerane, who stopped a goal-bound attempt in the closing minutes of the game. City will face Stars on Wednesday in KwaMhlanga in Mpumalanga, an opponent Peral observed as a lot more direct in their play. The play-offs end on 30 June, with City hosting Stars in Cape Town.
