Elusive street artist Banksy reveals new artwork – in France?
Banksy's back... and he / she / they may have crossed the Channel. In an Instagram post on Thursday, Banksy unveiled his latest piece: a traffic bollard casting a shadow of a lighthouse with the words "I want to be what you saw in me" written over it. The post was not accompanied by a caption or location. Within ten hours of posting, the image had collected more than 500,000 likes. A critique of state surveillance, perhaps? Or maybe a commentary about modern isolation? Or is it something more personal, a universal feeling characterised by a tinge of melancholia? Once again, Banksy shines in taking an ordinary object and turning it into something altogether more surprising – a simple yet potent reminder that what we dismiss in daily life as mundane can take on different meanings depending on how we decide to observe it... And not take the potentially extraordinary for granted. We all need a lighthouse, a sense of guidance and hope. We also feel the need to be seen for who we are and aspire to be a better version of ourselves... And how easier would life be if we managed to perceive ourselves through the eyes of another, and perhaps catch the reflection of the (hopefully better) person others imagine us to be? The new artwork has also left Banksy fans frantically speculating over its location. Geoguessers on social media have speculated that the street art may be Marseille, in the south of France. All we know is that the piece comes five months after 'Mother and Child', the December 2024 artwork that reinterpreted the religious iconography of the "Madonna and Child" in a contemporary light, and follows the elusive artist's 2023 'Beastly London' campaign. The latter was a nine-day burst of animal-themed murals scattered across the city which featured elephants peeking from boarded windows in Chelsea and a horny rhinoceros enthusiastically mounting a Nissan Micra in Walthamstow. Elsewhere, Blink-182 frontman Mark Hoppus sold his Banksy painting for €5.2 million at a London auction ealier this year, The record for a Banksy sale still stands at £18.6 million in 2021 (€27 million adjusted for inflation) for "Love is in the Bin". After Banksy installed a shredder into the frame of his 2006 painting "Girl with Balloon" and programmed it to self-destruct after an auction in 2018, the half-shredded painting was renamed and sold for the astronomical sum.

Maharashtra govt provides Rs 52cr to Aundh's Shri Bavani Museum museum for infra boost
Kolhapur : State govt sanctioned Rs 52 crore for the Shri Bavani Museum in Aundh, located 50km away from Satara. The museum plans to use these funds to construct another building on the same premises and repair the existing one. The current building, which was established several decades ago, lacks space to hold over 8,000 artifacts and 16,000 books. They all will be displayed in the new building. The museum features as many as 500 miniature paintings from major Indian schools (Jaipur, Kangra, Mughal, Punjab, Bijapur, Pahadi, and Maratha) spanning the 15th to 19th centuries and three original paintings of Raja Ravi Varma, making it one of India's largest such collections. "The plan has a few components such as a multi-storey building, repairs of the old building and premises development. The museum witnesses around 1,500 visitors every day and the number goes up during holidays. The current building, and the library in it, has artefacts cramped up. We plan to decongest the museum to bring a new aesthetic sense and also ensure the visitors can get a glimpse of the artefacts and the paintings very carefully. A presentation was organized at the Mantralaya a few weeks ago. Based on it, the funds were sanctioned," said a senior officer of the state archaeology and museums department on the condition of anonymity. The famous 'Mother and Child' stone sculpture by Henry Moore, Western paintings, including works like Madonna of the Book by Andrea Del Sarto, a Rembrandt self-portrait and others by artists such as AH Muller and L Goya, are also in the museum. Artefacts made of sandalwood and ivory, sculptured pots, weapons, and valuable ornaments, including a diamond collection, are displayed in a strong room. The Maharaj of Aundh principality dedicated his life and wealth to finding and collecting unique artefacts. The museum has a well-maintained garden and play area for children. Art enthusiasts spend hours walking through 18 sections. "We are planning to install modern equipment, especially for lighting and ventilation purposes. The seating arrangements will also be made. In short, the two buildings will be spacious enough to accommodate more tourists and provide them with a truly engaging experience," said the official.

PIMS undergoes revamp amid patient surge
With over 9,000 patients visiting daily, the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) hospital is undergoing significant transformation to meet the growing healthcare demands of the population. A series of major reforms aimed at improving healthcare services, patient satisfaction, and staff accountability at the country's premier public hospital, PIMS Executive Director Dr Imran Sikandar said on Friday. Over 9,000 patients seek medical attention at PIMS, with 7,000 attending various Outpatient Departments (OPDs), including paediatrics and the Mother and Child Health (MCH) centre, and 2,000 reporting to the emergency department.

Cannes 2025 adds Jennifer Lawrence thriller and Kristen Stewart's directorial debut to line-up
PARIS, April 23 — Cannes film festival added a new film starring Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson as well as Kristen Stewart's debut feature as a director to its roster of movies that will premiere next month on the French Riviera. American filmmaker Lynne Ramsay ('We Need To Talk About Kevin') has been selected for the main competition with her thriller 'Die My Love' starring Lawrence and Pattinson. Out of the 21 films in the main competition this year, seven have been made by women directors, the joint highest total. Iran's Saeed Roustaee is also set to compete for the main prize with his latest feature, 'Mother and Child', three years after showing 'Leila's Brothers' in Cannes which led to him being sentenced to six months in prison in Iran. The festival has also secured the world premiere for the first film directed by former Twilight star Kristen Stewart—'The Chronology of Water'—which will screen in the secondary 'Un Certain Regard' competition. The film follows a young girl 'who grows up in an environment ravaged by violence and alcohol' who finds 'refuge in literature,' according to its producers. Stewart will be up against fellow American actress-turned-director Scarlett Johansson whose first production 'Eleanor the Great' has also been selected for the 'Un Certain Regard' which showcases emerging talents. French screen favorite Juliette Binoche, who has won acting honours at Cannes, Berlin and the Oscars, will chair the jury judging the in-competition features which are vying for the coveted Palme d'Or. The 2025 line-up of 21 films includes some heavy-hitting festival circuit favourites including Wes Anderson, Iranian director Jafar Panahi, the Dardenne brothers from Belgium, and veteran American independent filmmaker Richard Linklater. — AFP
