Lena Dunham's New Netflix Movie 'Good Sex' Includes All Your Fave Rom-Com Stars
Rom-coms are so back—especially when it comes to Lena Dunham's new Netflix movie, Good Sex (debut date TBD). The film will feature major icons like Meg Ryan, Mark Ruffalo, and more—a lineup that's bound to generate buzz. Lena Dunham first gained notoriety for the HBO hit show Girls (which ended in 2017 after a successful six-season run), and she created Too Much, set to premiere on Netflix on July 10, 2025. Needless to say, Dunham knows a thing or two about creating a high-beloved rom-com, so this is sure to be something special! Here's what we know about the extremely anticipated movie. Set in , Good Sex centers on a couples therapist, played by , who decides to reenter the dating scene after years of prioritizing her patients over her love life. Her plans quickly unravel when she finds herself dating two very different men: one a decade her senior, played by , and the other a charismatic 20-something, played by Tucker Pillsbury. The Good Sex cast couldn't be more perfect! The group includes: Mark Ruffalo Natalie Portman Rashida Jones Meg Ryan Tucker Pillsbury Ruffalo's character will be portrayed as a successful businessman in his 50s, while Pillsbury's takes on a much more lax persona—a Brooklyn hipster with artistic ambitions. As 's character, Ally, is thrown into a love triangle whirlwind, she soon realizes that desire can defy logic and that there is no age limit on good sex. But while romance blossoms with both men, Ally struggles to keep both relationships separate and navigate her evolving desires before she risks losing them both—and herself in the process. Rashida Jones rounds out the cast as Ally's sharp and loyal best friend, offering a blend of comic relief and grounded wisdom. This character is Ally's go-to for all things love and chaos, constantly calling out the double standards surrounding aging, attraction, and emotional baggage. Classic vibes—with a twist—Jones brings humor, heart, and some real talk that keeps Ally rooted (or at least tries to). will play the role of the protagonist's therapist. Her casting marks a full-circle moment, as Ryan is synonymous with the American rom-com boom of the 1990s. She rose to fame through iconic performances in three beloved films written by Nora Ephron: (1989), Sleepless in Seattle (1993), and You've Got Mail (1998). Portman and Sophie Mas produce under their MountainA banner alongside Dunham and Michael Cohen through Good Thing Going Productions. Tim Bevan, Michael Sledd, and Michaela Celella also serve as executive producers for MountainA. There's no official release date for Good Sex yet, but we'll update you here as soon as we know more! Rashida Jones and Meg Ryan have joined the enlarging cast of Good Sex, the romantic comedy Lena Dunham is directing for Netflix. The duo join Natalie Portman, Mark Ruffalo and Tucker Pillsbury (aka, the singer-songwriter known as Role Model) in the feature that Dunham also wrote. But, per Netflix's logline, Ally gets more than she bargained for when she meets two men, one in his twenties (Pillsbury) and one in his fifties (Ruffalo), who show her there is no set formula for good sex. Ryan will play Portman's free-spirited therapist and mentor, dispensing advice that likely befits a rom-com icon. Jones will play Portman's raunchy and recently divorced best friend. Dunham, who tackled relationships and sex with HBO's Girls, is producing with her Good Thing Going Productions partner Michael Cohen. Portman and Sophie Mas are producing their banner, MountainA. For Jones, Sex marks the first feature the writer-actress has done since the 2020 Sofia Coppola comedy On the Rocks. She recently starred in Apple TV+'s mystery show Sunny. Mark Ruffalo & Singer Role Model Join Natalie Portman's Netflix Rom-Com Movie
Netflix has officially unveiled two male lead actors, who will be joining Academy Award winner Natalie Portman in the upcoming romantic comedy movie titled, Good Sex. The project hails from Golden Globe winner Lena Dunham (Girls, Tiny Furniture). 'After spending a decade in a failed relationship, successful couples' therapist Ally is turning 40 and is pushed, kicking and screaming, by her best friend back into the hopeless New York dating scene,' reads the film's official synopsis. 'But Ally finds her life pulled in opposing directions as she falls into a steamy fling with a 20-something Brooklyn hipster just as she begins a promising, more conventional relationship with Alan, a successful 50-something in Manhattan. As a romantic crossroads blossoms into a full-blown identity crisis, Ally juggles to keep these two very different men separate and to make sense of her own conflicting desires before she risks losing them both.' Oscar nominee Mark Ruffalo (The Kids are All Right, Avengers: Endgame), and singer Tucker Pillsbury aka Role Model have been tapped to star opposite Portman. Just like the Thor: Love and Thunder star, this would mark Ruffalo's first romantic comedy in a long while. He is no stranger to the genre, as he previously starred in a few iconic movies such as 13 Going on 30, Just Like Heaven, Rumor Has It, and Date Night. As for Pillsbury, this would mark the singer-songwriter's feature acting debut. The movie will be written and directed by Dunham. In addition to leading the cast, Portman will also be serving as a producer alongside Sophie Mas through their MountainA banner. Dunham and Michael Cohen are also producing through their production company Good Thing Going. But she gets more than she bargained for when she meets two men — one in his twenties and one in his fifties — who show her there is no set formula for good sex. His new HBO miniseries Task, a crime drama from Mare of Easttown's Brad Ingelsby, is set to premiere in September.
