Detroit Grand Prix: Downtown businesses cashing in during busy event week
The Brief The Movement Festival has wrapped, and now Detroit will be extra busy with the Grand Prix. Restaurants and other businesses tell FOX 2 they have been appreciating the extra foot traffic. The Detroit Grand Prix begins Friday, May 30. DETROIT (FOX 2) - It has been a busy week for the Motor City after thousands of people were downtown for the Movement Festival, and now thousands are expected for the Detroit Grand Prix. Meanwhile, restaurants and other businesses tell FOX 2 they have been appreciating the extra foot traffic. What they're saying Jenna Bruski and Danny Moreno, two people from Chicago, were among the thousands this weekend at the Movement Festival in downtown Detroit. But before they hit the road on Tuesday, they stopped by American Coney Island. Owner Grace Keros was happy to have them and all who dined there during the event. "Movement was really good for us. Anytime there's a big event downtown," Keros said. "It's good for not only myself but for all businesses." She says they saw a spike in sales while selling tons of hotdogs, wings, and water. "Very much increased foot traffic, even late into the evening, which is good," Keros said. "Another thing I appreciated because sometimes crowds get a little unruly or rowdy, I should say. These were great, great people. Great crowd. A lot of fun." Manager of Locos Tex-Mex, Alexis Odom, said they were not prepared for such a large turnout, but they're grateful and always love it when the Grand Prix comes to town. She says they too saw a bump in sales. "Yeah, at least, at least about 40% to 50% of an increase on the days that they are here," Odom said. What's next Now businesses are already preparing for the Grand Prix coming this weekend, and they believe it will be a huge success. "Just everything that has been going on for the last couple of years, I'm very proud of Detroit. And I'm happy. So, like, welcome. Bring everything back here, okay," Odom said. The Grand Prix begins on Friday, May 30. Just know there is tons of construction in the downtown area, so plan ahead before you travel.

Movement Music Festival in Detroit offers welcoming and creative space
A Detroit institution is back this weekend. Movement Music Festival is one of the longest-running dance music events in the world. From May 24 through May 26, Hart Plaza is going to be filled with thousands of techno music fans from all over the world for the festival. Dance music fans say it's a genre unlike any other. "There's so much to it that is just the base. It's almost hypnotizing," Aiden Graczyk, an aspiring techno DJ, said. "I guess, you know, the music is just powerful. [It] touches the soul." Techno was born in Detroit, experts say. "We didn't know that. I'm learning a lot of stuff about what Detroit is about," Lucy Sosa, who's attending her first Movement Festival, said. "So, I want to experience everything that you find in Detroit." According to researchers at Michigan State University, techno was invented by Black youth and nurtured in Black and queer spaces. "People who love to dance are a different breed," Jennifer Cullins from Warsaw, Indiana, said. "We are expressive, creative, artistic people of, you see in the fashion and the dress, and we're open-minded, and I feel like that's what really brings people together." Hundreds of performances will take place on six stages over the Memorial Day weekend. Dozens of vendors and food options are available for the massive crowds of people. "You can see the diversity and inclusion all around us, and that's what I love most," Sosa said. Detroit may be known for Motown, but its musical legacy includes a wide range of genres.

Detroit Dye House hosting glow- in-the-dark tie-dye party
Hart Plaza's multi-day techno music festival is coming May 24-26, and Detroit Dye House is preparing for the party with a make-your-own glow-in-the-dark tie-dye event on Thursday, May 15, at 7 p.m. The 'Vibe & Dye: A Movement Festival Prep Party' at Detroit Dye House's studio, 1418 Michigan Ave., is open to participants of all ages. Co-owner Greg Stemas said participants should register online to guarantee a spot at but walk-ins are welcome. According to a news release, participation costs $25 a person to use tie-dye materials and for guidance from expert dye tenders. Participants have the option to pick between blank items curated by Detroit Dye House, including t-shirts for $10, tank tops for $15, hoodies for $35, or to bring their own blank items for $5 an item. 'The full rainbow of dye will be available as well as the glowing dye unique to this event, which appears as a classic neon yellow-green color under regular lights,' according to a news release. 'There will be a special dark-dyeing station where participants can watch their creation come to life under black lights.' DJ Darren Shelton will spin tunes, and adult beverages are welcome in the studio, according to the press release. The event is not affiliated with the Movement Festival but enjoys the festival's techno vibe, Stemas said. Outside of Thursday's event, the studio hosts classes, birthday parties and more. It has an online store and typical in-person hours of noon-7 p.m., with potentially extended hours this summer, Stemas said. Detroit Dye House hosts classes, birthday parties and more. The studio is also open to walk-ins during its hours. It can accommodate about 40 dyers at once and more people for parties where not everyone is dyeing, Stemas said. Michigan Avenue has been home to Detroit Dye House for about 7 years, though the Brightlytwisted family business that runs it has about 30 years of dyeing experience, Stemas said. Stemas said color is what got him into tie-dye. Brightlytwisted started as a "seasonal art fair circuit" and has since transformed into a wholesale line that's collaborated with Nordstrom, Intermix, Free People and others, according to its website. Today, the family business focuses on experience in its Detroit Dye House and has expanded its operation by employing local artists.
