MTV to skip Movie & TV Awards for second year in a row, return unclear

NEW YORK — MTV is skipping its annual Movie & TV Awards for a second consecutive year and it's unclear if the show will ever return at all. Insiders close to the production told TMZ on Friday that the ceremony will remain 'on pause.' At present, there are no concrete plans to either completely give up on the awards or bring them back, following the drama surrounding the most recent ceremony in 2023. The network first pressed pause on the screen awards last year. Sources at the time told TMZ it would return in 2025 with a modified format. It's unclear what MTV intended with the show's would-be rebrand, though news of such a plan came after the 2023 Writers Guild Strike upended the event. Drew Barrymore withdrew from hosting the show to stand 'in solidarity' with the writers, who went on strike for 148 days, ending on Sept. 27, 2023. The strike coincided with that of the Screen Actors Guild's 118-day work stoppage. The 2023 event eventually went on, but without a host. It also skipped its usual red carpet and the show itself was live-streamed due to the WGA's intent to protest the show.

MTV Movie & TV Awards Nixed for 2025

Yara Sameh Sorry, MTV fans — there will be no ceremony for the network's Movie & TV Awards for a second consecutive year. MTV put a pause on the awards show last year, with the expectation it would return this year in a reimagined format. Sources tell Deadline the show remains on pause this year, and updates on future plans will be revealed once they're solidified. News that the 2024 MTV Movie & TV Awards was nixed came after the 2023 ceremony was impacted by the WGA strike and had to pivot away from a live event to a pre-taped show after Drew Barrymore pulled out as host and the Writers Guild geared up to picket its venue. Ratings were respectable, which raised the possibility for the awards show to permanently tweak its format. Traditionally held at the start of the summer blockbuster season, the show launched in 1992 as the MTV Movie Awards and was rebranded to include TV categories in 2017.
