A New Page for Syria's Post-Assad Era: al-Sharaa Forms Inclusive Cabinet

Mrirt – In a significant development for Syria's political transition, interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa announced on Saturday the formation of a 23-member cabinet designed to bridge sectarian divides and guide the country toward a new era of governance. 'The formation of a new government today is a declaration of our joint will to build a new state,' al-Sharaa said in a speech marking the formation of the government. The establishment of this transitional government comes amid international scrutiny following December's swift rebel offensive that ended the Assad family's decades-long grip on power. The new administration faces the immediate challenge of addressing sectarian violence, including recent attacks that killed hundreds of Alawite civilian lives along Syria's western coast. The interim government has been under pressure from world powers, particularly Western and Arab partners, to have a more inclusive government that respects the diverse ethnic and religious communities in the country. Responding to this pressure, al-Sharaa's cabinet features representatives from Syria's diverse religious and ethnic communities. The Alawite minority — the sect of toppled Assad — is represented by Yarub Badr, who will serve as transportation minister. Meanwhile, the Druze community gains representation through Amgad Badr's appointment to lead the agriculture ministry. The cabinet notably includes a woman Christian leader, Hind Kabawat, as social affairs and labor minister, bringing her background in interfaith dialogue and women's advocacy to the executive branch. Mohammed Yosr Bernieh will oversee Syria's financial affairs as the newly appointed finance minister. In a structural innovation, al-Sharaa has created two new ministries — one for sports and another for emergencies. The emergency ministry will be led by Raed al-Saleh, formerly head of the internationally recognized White Helmets rescue organization. The transitional government will operate without a prime minister, with al-Sharaa himself leading the executive function. He was appointed as interim president in January, pledging to rebuild Syria's institutions during a transition period that could extend up to five years before elections are held. This cabinet announcement follows Syria's recent constitutional declaration, which maintains that Islamic law is a foundational element while affirming commitments to women's rights and freedom of expression, designed to serve as the foundation for the interim period led by al-Sharaa. Morocco's Bayt Mal Al Quds Agency Delivers Critical Ramadan Aid in Jerusalem

Mrirt – Morocco's Bayt Mal Al Quds Agency has recently reviewed the results of its annual Ramadan humanitarian campaign during an Iftar gathering in Jerusalem. The event brought together religious and academic figures alongside representatives from social organizations that benefited from the agency's 2025 aid program. The agency distributed over 1,500 food baskets to families in need and approximately 3,000 meal portions at the Al-Aqsa Mosque and various social centers. Additionally, 200 orphans under the agency's care received new clothes for Eid Al Fitr celebrations. Palestinian leaders at the event lauded this collective Iftar initiative, which united diverse segments of Palestinian society around one table. The gathering marked the culmination of the Ramadan campaign and coincided with the commemoration of Laylat Al-Qadr, considered one of the holiest nights in Islam. He pointed out that the holy city and its residents need these efforts to continue. Meanwhile, Bishop Munib Younan, former president of the Lutheran World Federation, mentioned the strong, genuine unity and cohesion between Muslim and Christian Palestinians. He voiced hope that Palestinians would establish an independent state where they could live in peace and security. For his part, Abdullah Siam, Deputy Governor of Jerusalem, commended the meaningful Moroccan presence in the holy city through the commendable work of the Bayt Mal Al Quds Agency. Siam noted that the agency's initiatives, conducted under King Mohammed VI's guidance and supervision, have made tangible improvements to daily life for Jerusalem residents across many aspects of society. Earlier this month, the Agency and the Palestinian Ministry of Social Development signed an agreement to support orphaned and amputee children affected by the Israeli genocidal war on Gaza, which has left more than 38,000 children orphaned since it started in October 2023. Spain Incorporates Moroccan Culture, Green March into School Curriculum

Mrirt – In a move that consolidates its position in support of Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara, Spain has begun introducing elements of Moroccan history and culture into its school curriculum, including the Green March. First implemented in the region of Murcia, the reform signals a warming of relations between Madrid and Rabat and implicit support for Morocco's autonomy plan over its southern provinces. According to media reports, Murcia has pioneered this educational initiative by integrating a program dedicated to 'Arabic language and culture,' with special emphasis on Moroccan cultural elements. The curriculum puts forward major events in Morocco's history, particularly the Green March of November 6, 1975 — now recognized among Morocco's national celebrations. The Green March represented a pivotal moment when Morocco reclaimed its southern provinces after years of Spanish colonization through a peaceful mobilization of approximately 350,000 unarmed Moroccan volunteers who marched into the region. By officially incorporating the Green March into its educational framework, Spain appears to be going a step further in acknowledging the legitimacy of Moroccan sovereignty over the region. The curriculum changes aim to strengthen cultural bonds between the two nations by highlighting shared historical elements. As they pledged to promote mutual understanding, Spain and Morocco have taken notable steps in recent months to foster enhanced cooperation across various domains, including education and diplomacy. This shift in Spanish educational programming demonstrates a commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and supporting a pragmatic, sustainable solution to the Sahara dispute.
