Rare ‘Bawarchi' photo featuring Rajesh Khanna, Jaya Bachchan evokes nostalgia for simpler times
A rare photograph from the sets of the 1972 cult classic 'Bawarchi', featuring lead actors
Rajesh Khanna
and
Jaya Bachchan
, has surfaced online, instantly transporting fans back to a seemingly simpler era of filmmaking. The film, directed by the legendary
Hrishikesh Mukherjee
, remains a beloved gem in Hindi cinema for its heartwarming narrative and understated charm.
A Glimpse into the Bawarchi Family
The photo was recently by veteran actor Asrani, now 84, who also played a pivotal role in the film. The candid still captures the main cast in character, embodying the spirit of the 'Bawarchi family'. Rajesh Khanna is seen seated cross-legged on the floor, radiating a characteristic smile. Beside him, Jaya Bachchan (then Jaya Bhaduri) looks elegant in a saree, her signature braid and bindi completing her look.
Asrani himself sits next to her.
The elder members of the cast, portraying the senior residents of the house, are perched on the house threshold, completing the intimate family portrait. For those unaware, Bawarchi was a remake of Tapan Sinha's 1966 Bengali classic, Golpo Holeo Shotti, which starred Rabi Ghosh.
Unique opening credits narrated by Amitabh Bachchan
Adding a Thursday throwback to the discussion, cinephiles might recall a unique aspect of 'Bawarchi': the film famously had no traditional title credits, either at the beginning or the end.

Instead, it was Amitabh Bachchan, serving as the film's narrator, who introduced each cast member. As the film opened to a still image of the story's central home, Shanti Niwas, Bachchan's iconic voice set the scene: "Is ghar ke maalik hain ek retired postmaster.
Apni swargwasi patni ke naam par unhone makaan ka naam rakha tha Shanti Niwas."
Bawarchi Remake Announced
In 2024, news emerged of a planned remake of Bawarchi.
Filmmaker Anushree Mehta, who made her directorial debut with Radhika Apte's 'Mrs Undercover' in 2023, was tapped to helm the adaptation. Mehta revealed that she had been approached to remake three iconic films, including 'Bawarchi', 'Mili', and Gulzar's 'Koshish'.
Expressing her commitment to the project, Mehta stated, 'When my business partner Abir Sengupta (Jaadugar Films), Sameer Raj Sippy and I decided to join hands to produce these three iconic films, we were clear that we would leave no stone unturned in remaking them with utmost love and respect.
During our discussion on 'Bawarchi', Abir and Sameer were of the opinion that I should be writing and directing the remake." She continued, 'They were convinced that I would be able to tell the story in a manner which would make them proud.
We were in sync with our vision and I wholeheartedly agreed to come on board as the writer-director."
As per the last available update, Anushree Mehta had completed the script for the 'Bawarchi' adaptation and had aimed to commence filming in 2024. Conversations regarding the film's casting, with potential A-listers in consideration, were also reportedly underway. However, no further updates on the film's progress have been released since.
