Toddler dies after MPV rams car from behind

Dashcam images from a viral video showing the MPV approaching from behind and ramming the car. PETALING JAYA : A two-year-old girl died from her injuries after the car she was in was rammed from behind by a Toyota Alphard on the North-South Expressway near Muar, Johor, on Monday. Berita Harian reported that Ayesha Sofea Anwaruddin died on Wednesday morning after spending two days in intensive care fighting for her life. The toddler was with her family of four in a Proton Saga, which was on the left lane of the highway. A viral video of the dashcam footage showed the Alphard ramming into the car from behind. Muar police chief Raiz Mukhliz Azman Aziz confirmed that one of the passengers in the Saga had died in the crash which happened around 7.30am on May 26. 'The multipurpose vehicle (MPV) involved is believed to have lost control before crashing into the back of the car. This caused the car to lose control and skid before crashing into the road divider,' he said in a statement. Raiz said the driver and other two passengers in the Saga also sustained injuries. A breathalyser test cleared the driver of the Alphard from being under the influence of alcohol or any banned substance. He appealed for witnesses to come forward and assist in investigations.

In Johor, ‘Long Tiger' jailed 12 years, whipped for raping married woman who had just miscarried

KUALA LUMPUR, May 30 — A Rohingya man known as 'Long Tiger' was today sentenced to 12 years in prison and five strokes of the cane by the Sessions Court in Muar, Johor, after being found guilty of raping a married woman four years ago. Judge Irwan Suainbon handed down the sentence to Abdul Hamim Ab Hamid, 36, after ruling that the defence had failed to raise any reasonable doubt over the charge, Harian Metro reported today. In delivering his judgment, Irwan stated that the defence's arguments amounted to mere denial. 'Furthermore, the accused's defence failed to refute the prosecution's prima facie case. 'After reviewing both oral and written submissions from the prosecution and defence, the court concluded that the prosecution had proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt. 'The court also found the testimony of the accused's wife, who was the 11th defence witness (DW11), to be fabricated and unreliable,' he said. Throughout the trial, the prosecution called seven witnesses. According to the charge, Long Tiger raped a 19-year-old woman at a house in Taman Sri Jaya, Bukit Gambir, Tangkak between 1pm and 2.05pm on September 26, 2019. He was charged under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of 20 years and whipping upon conviction. Earlier, Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhamad Arif Marzuki urged the court to consider public interest, noting the gravity of the offence and its lasting psychological impact on the victim. 'It is especially revolting that the accused raped the victim, who had just recently suffered a miscarriage. She was his employee and was subjected to this horrific abuse,' he submitted. The court ruled that the prison sentence would take effect from the date of his arrest, 7 August 2021. Long Tiger is currently serving a four-year sentence handed down by the Tangkak Magistrates' Court after being convicted under Section 388 of the Penal Code. The father of two must complete that sentence before serving the one under Section 376(1). On January 20, 2022, he was sentenced by the same court to 12 months' imprisonment for escaping custody at 11.55am on December 15, 2021. He was charged under Section 224 of the Penal Code for that offence, which provides for up to two years in jail, a fine, or both. Additionally, on June 1, 2022, the Muar High Court overturned a discharge not amounting to an acquittal previously granted by the Tangkak Magistrates' Court on May 17 in the Section 388 case, citing an error in the original order.

#SHOWBIZ: Aliff Aziz's mother 'likes' photo of Bella and Syed Saddiq

KUALA LUMPUR: Former actor Hairul Azreen's recent social media post, featuring "besties" Bella Astillah and Muar Member of Parliament Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, has been "liked" by a most unlikely person. That person turned out to be Bella's former mother-in-law from Singapore, Siti Hafiza Basharahil, who is the mother of Singaporean singer and actor Aliff Aziz. The Assistant star Hairul uploaded a photograph of himself with Syed Saddiq, Bella, singer-actor Tomok, and comedians Achey and Sharif Doli of Zero fame, and in the caption he said: "Dulang boys YB Syed Saddiq and Bella Astillah. Tomok is the singer while Achey and Sharif are the hosts. My show is simply magical!" Interestingly, Hairul used legendary Singaporean singer Anita Sarawak's Selamat Pengantin Baru as the background music for his post. Netizens remarked that it was "a most pleasant surprise" to see Aliff's mother "like" the post. Many of them also hoped that Syed Saddiq and Bella would "take their relationship to the next level" and follow Hairul's cheeky hint for them to tie the knot. Bella and Aliff have two children Ayden Adrean, 8, and Ara Adreanna, 5, from their marriage from 2016 to 2024.

Court sets June 25 for verdict on Syed Saddiq's appeal against graft conviction

KUALA LUMPUR, April 24 — Muar MP Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman will find out on June 25 whether he succeeds in overturning his conviction and sentence for criminal breach of trust (CBT), misappropriation of property, and money laundering. The Court of Appeal fixed the date during case management today, according to deputy public prosecutor Datuk Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin. The former youth and sports minister, 33, was sentenced in November 2023 to seven years' jail, two strokes of the rotan, and a RM10 million fine after being found guilty on four charges linked to his time as Bersatu Youth chief. Among the charges: abetting CBT involving RM1 million from Bersatu Youth (Armada) funds, misusing RM120,000 from an Armada Bumi Bersatu Enterprise account, and laundering RM100,000 in illicit proceeds. The appeal was heard by a three-judge panel led by Datuk Ahmad Zaidi Ibrahim, with both sides presenting submissions over three days. If the appeal is allowed, Syed Saddiq will walk free — though prosecutors can still take the case to the Federal Court. If the appeal is dismissed, the Federal Court remains his final legal recourse.
