Man charged in Johor for trafficking 20kg of syabu

BATU PAHAT: An unemployed man has been charged in the Magistrate's Court here with the trafficking of more than 20kg of syabu. The charge against Muhammad Nur Hazreq Kairuddin, 36, was read out before magistrate Nurasidah A. Rahman but no plea was recorded because the charge falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court. Bernama reported that Muhammad Nur Hazreq was caught trafficking 20.712kg of methamphetamines at the jetty near the lamppost of Lorong 3, 1/7, Minyak Beku, Batu Pahat, at 7pm on April 21. The charge under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 carries the death penalty or life imprisonment, upon conviction. If the death penalty is not imposed upon conviction, he will face a punishment of at least 12 strokes of the cane. The case was handled by deputy public prosecutor Firdaus Ruslan while the accused was not represented. Last Tuesday, Johor police chief Comm Datuk M. Kumar was reported to have said that a 36-year-old man was arrested at a jetty in Batu Pahat after an inspection of a pickup truck with him yielded 20 bundles of suspected syabu weighing more than 20kg and worth more than RM662,000. He said the syndicate, believed to have been active since February, was using vehicles to store drugs before smuggling them to neighbouring countries by sea. In an unrelated case, a 23-year-old unemployed local was charged in the Magistrate Court here for trafficking and possessing more than 225g of drugs. Lim Ken Yi only nodded his head after the charges were read out to him at the court in front of magistrate Azureen Sahira Sauffee Afandi. No plea was recorded. Based on the first charge sheet, he is accused of trafficking 219.06g of methylenedioxy-methamphetamine (MDMA) along Jalan Dato Abdullah Tahir here at around 1.30pm on April 20. For the second charge, Lim is accused of possessing 6g of ketamine at the same time and location. He was charged under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Section 12 of the same Act, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment, upon conviction. Azureen Sahira set June 25 for case mention.

No bail was offered and the case will be re-mentioned for submission of chemical reports on June 30.
