Israel army says killed Hamas commander in Lebanon for planning attacks

The Israeli military said it killed a Hamas commander in an air strike in southern Lebanon on Monday, accusing him of planning attacks against Israel from Lebanese territory. "Muhammad Shaheen was eliminated after recently planning terror attacks, directed and funded by Iran, from Lebanese territory against the citizens of the state of Israel," the military said in a statement, adding that he was killed in the Sidon area.

Israel to keep troops in Lebanon despite Hezbollah withdrawal agreement

The Israeli army will keep soldiers in five different locations in southern Lebanon despite a deadline for a full withdrawal expiring on Tuesday. The IDF says that its soldiers will be 'temporarily deployed' in mountain areas and ridges on the Lebanese side of the border, overlooking several villages and settlements on the Israeli side. An IDF official said that Israel has withdrawn from all other areas in southern Lebanon and handed over control to the Lebanese army. But Hezbollah has rejected Israel's continued presence in any part of southern Lebanon. Naim Qassem, Hezbollah secretary general, said on Sunday: 'Israel must withdraw completely on Feb 18, it has no pretext, no five points or other details. This is the agreement,' adding that 'everyone knows how an occupation is dealt with'. Last month, Lebanon, Israel and the United States agreed to extend Israeli forces' presence in south Lebanon until Feb 18 as the Lebanese army had not been deployed in all areas. Israel has attacked Hezbollah positions numerous times since the ceasefire took effect on Nov 27 last year, saying the Lebanese terror group had violated the terms continuously. Hezbollah, on its part, has accused Israel of violating the ceasefire by attacking positions in south Lebanon. Under the agreement's terms, Israel is allowed to attack any immediate threats from Hezbollah as long as it is coordinated with the US and conveyed to the Lebanese government. In the Sidon area on Monday, an Israeli airstrike killed Muhammad Shaheen, the head of Hamas's operations department in Lebanon. 'Shaheen was a significant source of knowledge within the terrorist organisation and was responsible throughout the war for various terror attacks, and rocket launches aimed at Israeli civilians,' the IDF said. Israel has also accused Iran of smuggling money to Hezbollah via planes to Beirut, causing Lebanon to halt all flights from Iran fearing they could be shot down. Israeli military says it killed Hamas official in southern Lebanon

The Israeli military on Monday killed a Hamas leader in southern Lebanon's Sidon area, it said in a statement. The army said Muhammad Shaheen was the head of the operations department of Hamas in Lebanon and that he had recently been involved in promoting "terrorist plots" with Iranian direction and funding from Lebanese territory against Israeli citizens. An Israeli strike on a car in Lebanon's southern port city of Sidon targeted an official in the Palestinian group, two Lebanese security sources told Reuters earlier. Lebanon's state news agency said rescuers had removed one body from the car but did not identify the victim. The Israeli military has been carrying out strikes against members of Hamas, allied Lebanese armed group Hezbollah and other factions in Lebanon, in parallel with the Gaza war. Those armed groups have launched rockets, drones and artillery attacks across the border into northern Israel. Under a truce brokered by Washington in November, Israeli troops were granted 60 days to withdraw from southern Lebanon where they had waged a ground offensive against fighters from Iran-backed Hezbollah since early October. That deadline was later extended to February 18, but Israel's military requested that it keep troops in five posts in southern Lebanon, sources told Reuters last week.

Israel eliminates top Hamas commander in Lebanon

The Israeli Air Force on Monday eliminated the head of Hamas's Operations Department in Lebanon near Sidon, according to a joint Israel Defense Forces and Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) statement. 'Muhammad Shaheen was eliminated after recently planning terror attacks, directed and funded by Iran, from Lebanese territory against the citizens of the State of Israel,' according to the statement. Shaheen 'was a significant source of knowledge within the terrorist organization and was responsible throughout the war for various terror attacks, and rocket launchers aimed at Israeli civilians,' it continued. According to Israel's Ynet outlet, which cited government sources, Shahin was planning to attack Jewish targets outside of Israel. Shahin's identity was confirmed via DNA testing, a Lebanese security source told Al Jazeera. The strike comes a day before the Feb. 18 deadline for Israeli forces to withdraw from Lebanon under the terms of the November ceasefire that ended over a year of war between the Jewish state and Lebanon's Hezbollah terrorist organization. Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem warned Israel on Sunday that if it does not withdraw its forces by Feb. 18, 'we will know how to deal with it.' 'Israel must fully withdraw on Feb. 18, it has no excuse,' the Hezbollah chief said in a televised address cited by France 24. Under the Nov. 27 Israel-Lebanon ceasefire agreement, Israeli forces are to gradually withdraw from Southern Lebanon as the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) and U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) assume responsibility for ensuring Hezbollah remains disarmed south of the Litani River. The agreement originally mandated an Israeli withdrawal within 60 days, but was extended until Feb. 18, according to a White House statement on Jan. 26. The extension was requested by Israel due to the slow progress of the LAF in deploying to Southern Lebanon. The IDF has conducted frequent border operations to prevent Hezbollah from regaining strength, including intelligence gathering, reconnaissance and clearing terrain to disrupt terrorist movements. The Israeli Air Force on Sunday evening carried out strikes on several Hezbollah sites in Lebanon housing rocket launchers and weapons, according to the military.
