Cleaner pleads not guilty to stealing gold chain and coin bank
MELAKA: A cleaner pleaded not guilty at the Ayer Keroh magistrate's court here today to stealing a gold chain and a coin bank last month.
Muhammad Syafiq Mohamad Izhar, 30, made the plea before magistrate Sharda Shienha Mohd Suleiman.
The accused, along with another individual still at large, is alleged to have stolen a gold chain belonging to the late wife of the complainant, as well as a coin bank containing RM15,060, at a house in Taman Pandan Jaya 1, Balai Panjang, on April 22.
He faces charges under Section 380 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34 of the same act. If convicted, he could face a jail term of up to 10 years, a fine, or both.
For subsequent offences, he may also face caning in addition to imprisonment and a fine.
Deputy public prosecutor Hanis Aliah Ahmad Kamarulnajuib proposed a RM6,000 bail, while defence lawyer Umar Zulkarnain requested a lower amount, citing that the accused has a fixed address in Melaka and is unlikely to abscond.
The defence also said Syafiq's wife would post the bail and that he was willing to comply with additional conditions, including reporting to a nearby police station as requested by the prosecution.
Sharda Shienha set bail at RM3,000 and fixed June 18 for the next mention for document submission.
