Patna: Sanjeev Mukhia, the alleged mastermind of the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) UG-2024 paper leak case, was sent to Beur jail after his two-day remand ended on Wednesday. The court had granted the Economic Offences Unit (EOU) two additional days of remand to interrogate Mukhia on Monday, allowing further questioning after an initial 36-hour remand during which Mukhia made several shocking revelations. Now, the EOU will ask for his remand in all the cases in which he was wanted in the state. Besides, the investigating agency will probe his connections with gangs active in other states, according to EOU officials. Additional director general (ADG) of EOU, Nayyar Hasnain Khan, said, "Now the next action of the probe agency is to ask for his remand in all the cases in which he is wanted, including Bihar Police constable recruitment exam-2023, BPSC Teachers Recruitment Exam (TRE)-3, and NEET (UG)-2024. Mukhia was employed as a technical assistant at Noorsarai Horticulture College in Nalanda. A resident of Nagarnausa village in Nalanda district, Mukhia was involved in examination paper leaks . The court granted the EOU's application on Monday, allowing further questioning after an initial 36-hour remand during which Mukhia made several shocking revelations. Confirming the development, additional director general (ADG) of EOU, Nayyar Hasnain Khan, said, "Earlier, the EOU requested the court to remand Mukhia for five days. However, the court approved a 36-hour remand, which ended on Sunday. Following this, the EOU interrogated Mukhia, during which he made several revelations. Subsequently, the EOU filed another application for remand, which the court accepted and gave a remand of two days till Wednesday." Khan added that Mukhia, currently lodged in Beur Jail, would be interrogated again over the next two days following court approval. According to EOU sources, Mukhia revealed he had been evading arrest for 18 months, hiding in several locations. The remand was approved in connection with the Bihar Police constable recruitment examination paper leak of 2023, which is currently under investigation by the EOU. Confirming the development, additional director general (ADG) of the EOU, Nayyar Hasnain Khan, said, "The agency is now working to uncover more details about the exam paper leaks and Mukhia's accomplices. The EOU requested to take Mukhia into custody for five days, but the court, after hearing the case, approved a 36-hour remand." On Friday, the CBI interrogated Mukhia for around three hours. He is accused of leaking papers for several examinations, including the 2023 constable recruitment, 2023 BPSC teacher recruitment and the 2024 NEET UG. According to official sources, Mukhia had been living with his girlfriend in Danapur while evading arrest. He remained on the run for 18 months, initially hiding in Nepal before returning to Patna to form a new network. Mukhia, who had been absconding since the NEET UG held in May 2024, is considered the key accused in the high-profile paper leak case. He had evaded arrest for several months before being tracked down in the state capital. "The mastermind behind various exam paper leak cases, who is wanted in several incidents, was reported to be staying in an apartment in Danapur," said EOU additional director general Nayyar Hasnain Khan. "The information was verified and relayed to the Patna SSP, who directed the Danapur SHO to assist in the operation. The EOU's special operations team, with the help of Danapur police, was instructed to conduct a raid to arrest the fugitive Mukhia," Khan added. The raid was carried out near Saguna Mor under the jurisdiction of Danapur police station, leading to Mukhia's formal arrest. EOU's preliminary investigation had earlier revealed that the NEET UG question paper was stolen from the control room of OASIS School in Hazaribag, Jharkhand, on May 5, 2024. The case was later handed over to the CBI. So far, 40 people have been arrested by the EOU and CBI in connection with the leak. "The EOU will take Mukhia on remand in the constable recruitment exam paper leak case. The NEET case is now under CBI investigation and they may seek his remand subsequently," Khan added. A former technical assistant at the Horticulture College in Noorsarai, Mukhia is accused of taking Rs 40 lakh from each student in exchange for leaked NEET papers.
