BJP sees opportunity to wrest Mukhtar family's traditional Mau seat in bypoll
Lucknow: The disqualification of Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) MLA Abbas Ansari from Mau Sadar assembly seat following his conviction in a hate speech case has necessitated byelection on the seat. All eyes are now on the BJP-led NDA which sees a chance to wrest the constituency which has been a stronghold of late gangster-politician Mukhtar Ansari and his family for nearly two decades. Mukhtar's son Abbas Ansari won the seat in 2022 on SBSP ticket, which was then an ally of the Samajwadi Party. Now, SBSP is BJP's ally. Abbas had defeated BJP's Ashok Singh by 48,000 votes. The Mau Sadar seat was represented by Mukhtar since 1996 – twice on a BSP ticket (1996 and 2017), twice as an independent (2002 and 2007), and once as a Quami Ekta Dal candidate in 2012. Mukhtar died following a cardiac arrest while being lodged in Banda jail in Mar 2024. Party sources said BJP's organisational machinery has hit the ground running in the Muslim-dominated constituency. Sources said the party plans to build a groundswell on the lines of Muslim-dominated Rampur and Kundarki assembly seats, which the BJP won in byelections in 2022 and 2024, respectively. UP BJP chief Bhupendra Chaudhary said the party is working among the people in the district. "We will intensify the groundwork in the coming days," he said, adding that the party's central leadership would decide the candidate after due consultation. "The byelection on Mau would be contested by the NDA. Whether it would be BJP or SBSP will be decided in due course," he said. SBSP, too, has staked its claim to contest from the seat. SBSP president and UP minister Om Prakash Rajbhar said his party, which has been a strong contender in Mau Sadar, would seek to contest the byelection with BJP's support. Rajbhar emphasised that the SBSP was the runner-up in 2017 and won the seat in 2022, highlighting the party's growing influence in the region. A senior BJP functionary, however, said the party gave a fair chance to the SBSP by allowing it to contest the Ghosi Lok Sabha seat in 2024 which includes the Mau Sadar segment. The move, however, did not yield the desired results as Congress-backed SP candidate Rajeev Rai defeated Rajbhar's son Arvind by a significant margin of over 1.6 lakh votes. Experts said the BJP wants to capitalise on Mukhtar Ansari family's legal troubles besides highlighting the clean governance of the Yogi govt. Analysts say the disqualification of Abbas Ansari and Mukhtar's absence have significantly weakened the family's political influence in the seat. At present, Mukhtar's brother, Afzal Ansari, is Ghazipur MP on an SP ticket while his elder brother Sibghatullah's son Suhaib Ansari is MLA from Mohamadabad. However, Afzal Ansari too faces multiple criminal cases, further jeopardising the family's political future.

Nashville SC beats New York Red Bulls 2-1 for first time in MLS team history
B.J. Callaghan called it a "daydream" of a Nashville SC goal. But it was 100 percent real. The whole sequence happened in just six seconds. Sam Surridge and Daniel Lovitz played a one-two pass down the left wing. Surridge wound up for what looked like a shot, but shuttled the ball over to Alex Muyl on his right. Muyl walled off the New York Red Bulls' Raheem Edwards, and with his back the facing goal, put the ball on a tee for Hany Mukhtar, who had been waiting just outside the penalty box. Mukhtar drove his shot low, hard and past goalkeeper Carlos Coronel. Advertisement Mukhtar's goal was the clincher in Nashville's history-making 2-1 win over the Red Bulls on May 14 at Geodis Park. It's the first time Nashville (7-4-2, 23 points) has ever beaten New York (5-5-3, 18 points), and it continued the club's best-ever start to an MLS season. Nashville moved up to fourth in the Eastern Conference, its highest since July 2023. Nashville lost 2-0 to the Red Bulls, last season's MLS Cup runners-up, on March 1. The Boys in Gold are now on a four-match unbeaten streak in MLS play and haven't lost in five games in all competitions. "All of these little moments that we're accumulating in the season continue to allow us to learn and grow," Callaghan, Nashville's coach, said. NSC finishes off its homestand on May 17 against D.C. United. Patrick Yazbek opens scoring with his first Nashville goal Nashville had trouble getting through the Red Bulls until the 34th minute, when midfielder Patrick Yazbek jumped on a headed pass from Surridge. Yazbek tore toward the goal with a huge advantage in numbers, including Muyl open on his left. Instead of laying it off, he darted toward the middle and ripped a shot from the top of the 18-yard box. Yazbek's shot hit the back of the net so hard it caromed 30 yards back out. Advertisement "I'd be lying if I didn't say the thought crossed my head that he should have passed the guy in," Callaghan said. "But when you have confident players, and we do, he cuts off to his right foot and hits a great shot. We always want players to be able to make those decisions." The goal was Yazbek's first in 20 matches with Nashville. "It just came off nicely," he said. "I've been working on my finishing, and I think at times I probably should be a little more selfish than what I am." Hany Mukhtar finding form Mukhtar, Nashville's top attacker, has never been a particularly fast starter. He didn't register a goal contribution during his first three games. Last season was his worst since entering MLS in 2020, with eight goals and nine assists — a far cry from his 23 goals and 11 assists during his MVP 2022 season. Advertisement But with his latest goal — which came six minutes after the Red Bulls' Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting equalized in the 56th minute — Mukhtar has clearly put those struggles in the past. He has six goals, which ties Surridge for the team high. Four of those goals have come in his past four games. "Hany's a player that breathes, sleeps, eats soccer," Callaghan said. "He's someone who's constantly trying to improve himself, study the game and how he can improve . . . He's starting to figure out where he's finding the ball in the penalty box and doing more repetitions in those angled shots." It already has surpassed that total in 2025, with a 6-1-1 record at Geodis, and has outscored opponents there 18-6. NSC has won four straight home games since losing to first-place FC Cincinnati on March 29. Advertisement "From day one, we said we want to be a team that represents this city," Callaghan said. " . . . We want (fans) to come to the stadium. They give us great energy. And from there, we want to make this place a really difficult place." Nashville covets home cooking, aims to taste victory vs. D.C. United
With five straight all-competition wins at home, including their first ever victory over the New York Red Bulls on Wednesday, Nashville SC are flying high entering their match Saturday against visiting D.C. United. The recent success, which has been propelled by 2022 MLS MVP Hany Mukhtar, has lifted Nashville (7-4-2, 23 points) to fourth place in the Eastern Conference. D.C. United (3-6-4, 13 points) arrive after failing to score in their last two matches and won't have top threat Christian Benteke (six goals), who sustained an ankle injury Wednesday in a scoreless draw with New York City FC. It adds up to a more challenging date for D.C. United as they face a Nashville team that's accumulated more points at home than any side in MLS. "We want Geodis Park to be a really difficult place to play," Nashville coach B.J. Callaghan said. "And right now, it is." With six home wins, Nashville has already exceeded its total from last year (five), when it failed to make the MLS playoffs for the first time since it entered the league in 2020. Mukhtar has been the recent catalyst, scoring four goals in his last three home matches, including the decider in the 63rd minute that gave Nashville its first win over the Red Bulls in eight meetings. Mukhtar (six goals, four assists) and Sam Surridge (six goals, three assists) fuel Nashville's attack. During its drought, D.C. has had difficulty generating chances as it has put just seven shots on goal. "We did a good job of breaking the first line but just didn't really progress the ball enough," D.C. United coach Troy Lesesne said after the scoreless match on Wednesday. The bright spot against New York City FC was keeper Luis Barraza (six saves). In the six matches he has started, Barraza has surrendered just eight goals. "D.C.'s gonna present unique issues for us by the way that they play, a really good pressing team," Callaghan said. "They're hungry for a win."
