NMPA returns as title sponsor for sixth Indian Open of Surfing

Mangaluru: The sixth Indian Open of Surfing (IOS), India's premier national surfing competition sanctioned by the Surfing Federation of India (SFI), the sport's governing body in the country, announced the continued support of key sponsors. The New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) returns as the title sponsor for the second consecutive year. Karnataka Tourism, a long-time supporter of surfing in the state, comes on board as the 'presented by' partner for the sixth year running, while Cycle Pure Agarbatti extends its association as the 'powered by' sponsor. The event will be hosted by Mantra Surf Club and organised by the Surfing Swami Foundation under the aegis of SFI, from May 30 to June 1, at Tannirbhavi Eco Beach. NMPA chairman Venkata Ramana Akkaraju said, "We firmly believe surfing can transform Mangaluru into a global destination for ocean sports and eco-tourism. We look forward to another impactful edition." Deputy commissioner Mullai Muhilan MP said, "The state is committed to promoting adventure tourism and coastal development through such platforms." Rammohan Paranjape, VP of Surfing Federation of India and director of Mantra Surf Club, said, "Hosting it at the state's local beaches reflects our commitment to nurturing local surf culture. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 새로운 로봇 모험이 여기서 시작됩니다. 오늘 가입하세요! 기계 경기장 플레이하기 Undo We are confident this year's edition will further elevate India's standing on the global surfing map." The NMPA Indian Open of Surfing carries even more significance following India's milestone achievement in 2024, when the national surf team earned its first-ever quotas for a multi-sport event at the Asian Surf Championship in the Maldives, securing two spots for the 2026 Asian Games. With rankings on the line and qualification opportunities at stake for the upcoming Asian Surf Championship—the final selection event for the Asian Games—this year's IOS becomes a crucial battleground.

UDAL initiative launched

Mangaluru: Deputy commissioner Mullai Muhilan MP launched the Urban & District Advancement through Localising Innovations (UDAL) initiative and the DC's Fellowship Programme virtually on Saturday. UDAL, which is being implemented through organising partner InUnity-Innovation for Community and Mangaluru Smart City Limited (MSCL), is a platform for students and innovators to work on real-world civic issues in Dakshina Kannada, mentored by experts and supported by the district administration. Themes focused under the UDAL are sustainable city, urban city planning, public healthcare service, and disaster management. The DC said, "We explored opportunities to harness Mangaluru's capabilities for a long time. Our objective is to establish a structured framework that enables institutions to work alongside administrators for technological integration. We face numerous challenges, including waterlogging, difficulties in handling solid waste disposal, and various other concerns that require dedicated attention from individuals who can persistently identify solutions and address shortcomings. Engaging with educational institutions and collaborating with young students to comprehend challenges forms the core objectives. These partnerships aim to facilitate policy formulation through active participation and research-based understanding. Students gain direct experience with urban and district-level challenges while collaborating with senior administrative officials to develop effective solutions." Students can transform their technological solutions into viable products, fostering a startup ecosystem in Mangaluru, he said. "Young and bright individuals can contribute their expertise in technology and theoretical knowledge, while administrators continue their duties. Through collaboration, we can develop solutions that benefit everyone involved, particularly students participating in the DC's Fellowship programme. This initiative not only enhances their professional credentials but also cultivates their entrepreneurial spirit," he added. Under the DC's Fellowship programme, students will get an opportunity to work closely with the DC and city corporation sections on real civic innovations. They will be able to get mentored by industry and govt experts. Applications are shortlisted based on the criteria, and the top 10 fellows are paired with department champions to solve the pressing challenges, said a resource person. Dakshina Kannada ZP CEO and in-charge DC Anandh K participated in the virtual meeting.

Work on planting 4,000 saplings at Pilikula Golf Club to be completed soon

Mangaluru: A major tree plantation drive was launched at the Pilikula Golf Club premises, aimed at planting 4,000 varieties of native species. The drive is part of the Amar (Prakrutiye Pragati), Plant a Tree, Adopt a Tree project. The drive at the golf club was launched by Dakshina Kannada DC Mullai Muhilan MP recently. Environmentalist Jeeth Milan Roche, leading the drive, told TOI: "The effort is centred at the Pilikula Golf Club, which previously had a large number of acacia trees. As part of the green restoration effort, which has been included in the club's upgradation plan, around 4,000 pits have been dug, and around 2,200 native species saplings have already been planted, with watering currently in progress." Further, the project will also include 150 -180 varieties of local mango trees. These saplings will be sourced from Dr P Manohara Upadhya, a veterinary surgeon who is leading the development of 'Maavu Mantapa,' a gene bank dedicated to preserving indigenous mango species. These varieties are from Kasaragod, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Kodagu, and Uttara Kannada, and many are considered threatened. "Only treated water is being used for the entire project," Roche said. In addition to the plantation within the golf club, dense plantation work is being planned outside its boundary using the trench plantation method. Roche said, "This is the first time we are planting ahead of the rains, which is beneficial as each plant needs about a month to stabilise. However, it is a costly and physically demanding process. The Pilikula terrain is tough, comprising laterite soil. Because of the soaring temperatures, my back skin has peeled off. We have been using a tractor-mounted digger to dig pits that are 1.5 to 2 feet wide and 4.5 to 5 feet deep. " Manoj Shetty, captain of Pilikula Golf Club, said, "At present, we are redesigning the golf course into an international one, and as part of this transformation, we'll remove 400 acacia trees and replace them with 4,000 native species inside the course and an additional 5,000 trees outside the boundary. We'll plant native species from the Western Ghats, which will attract a wide variety of birds and enrich the local biodiversity," he said.

MCC to have a new policy for in situ use of construction and demolition waste

Mangaluru: The (MCC) will implement a new policy to effectively manage the construction and demolition (C&D) waste generated in the city. In response to public complaints that the C&D waste was not being managed properly, the MCC decided to establish a permanent policy. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Citizens, including social activists, have been complaining about the non-adherence to the Rules in the city. Many have reported debris being dumped in public places, especially by the side of rivers, both in the city and its outskirts. People complain that the waste collection vehicles do not collect C&D waste from the city. Deputy commissioner Mullai Muhilan MP, who is also the administrator of the MCC, said the new policy will place more emphasis on decentralised and in situ use of C&D waste. The DC stated that the city corporation faces issues related to C&D waste management. "The C&D waste must be handled in a decentralised manner. After the demolition of an existing structure, a new building will be constructed at the same spot. Considering the proportion of the C&D waste, our highest priority is construction waste, which is being dumped everywhere. Hence, we are working on a policy to enforce in situ usage. Those who demolish an existing building and construct a new one should not dispose of the waste outside. Instead, they should ensure that such waste materials are processed at the site and reused," the DC said. It may be recalled that National Environment Care Federation (NECF) secretary Shashidhar Shetty demanded action against the blatant violation of CRZ norms through the dumping of soil and debris into rivers at Boloor and surrounding areas in the city recently. Shetty, who brought this issue to the notice of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), said that debris is being dumped into the river at Boloor, Sultan Battery, Fourth Mile near Kuloor Ferry Road, Kudroli and Boloor sea face, and Adyar.

DC appeals to people to cooperate for survey of darkhastu land

Mangaluru: The Dakshina Kannada district administration appointed additional surveyors from other districts to conduct a survey of the darkhastu (govt grant) land to complete the Podi process (demarcation and fixing of boundaries), which is being carried out across the state as a drive. Deputy commissioner Mullai Muhilan said that since a large number of applications are pending in the district, the govt gave permission to utilise the services of licensed surveyors. While 129 surveyors were deputed to complete Form 1 to 5 of the Podi process, an additional 50 surveyors from other districts also arrived to expedite the process, the DC told reporters on Tuesday. Land surveyors will carry out the measurement work. The applicants should be present when the surveyors arrive, show the boundaries of the approved land, and ensure that boundary stones are placed as per the measurements. The DC appealed to the public to cooperate when the surveyors visit. He said the plotting of the land was a major issue in Dakshina Kannada, and landholders faced difficulties while selling their land. The land records division of the Revenue Commissioner's office developed software related to the project. All Darkhastu cases are being handled completely through the Mojini online platform. Measurement will be done simultaneously for all eligible approved landholders, and the tahsildar will issue orders accordingly. Dakshina Kannada district has 30,685 applications that require completion of the Form 1 to 5 process, the DC explained. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Google Brain Co-Founder Andrew Ng, Recommends: Read These 5 Books And Turn Your Life Around Blinkist: Andrew Ng's Reading List Undo SC SURVEY: Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Mullai Muhilan said that 2046 teachers have been given training to carry out the Scheduled Caste internal reservation survey in the district.
