Mumbai police book 8 persons in crackdown on those selling tobacco, drugs near schools
Mumbai: In a drive to protect schoolchildren from exposure to harmful substances, the Mumbai Police Zone-5, has taken firm action against the illegal sale of intoxicants near educational institutions.
From June 18 to 20, eight individuals were booked under Section 77 of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, for allegedly selling intoxicating drinks, narcotics, tobacco, and psychotropic substances to minors under the age of 18. The accused were operating within a 100-meter radius of schools and colleges across areas such as Dadar, Shivaji Park, Mahim, Shahunagar, Dharavi, Kurla, and Vinoba Bhave Nagar.
According to the Act, offenders can face imprisonment of up to seven years and a fine of up to Rs 1 lakh. Simultaneously, in coordination with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), police conducted 56 eviction and seizure actions against hawkers and vendors selling banned products near schools. An additional 111 enforcement actions were taken under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA).
