5 men, who robbed youth after tying him to tree, arrested

Mohali: Four days after a youth was robbed and thrashed after being tied to a tree in a park in Phase 9, Mohali police arrested five persons, including a minor, allegedly involved in the crime. The victim, Munish Kumar of Sector 69, was made to transfer Rs 16,000 via Google Pay to accounts of assailants, who also took away his mobile phone and a silver chain. The incident occurred in the early hours on May 19. DSP City 2 Harsimran Singh Ball acting on the complaint filed at Phase 8 police station, police arrested Baljot Singh alias Ladi and Gurjashan Singh of Sohana, Gagandeep Singh alias Gaggu of Amb Sahib Colony, Anmolpreet Singh of Nanhera village (Patiala), and a minor. According to the police, the incident took place when Munish was lured to the park through a message received on a dating app. The sender asked about his well-being and offered to meet him. Soon after, Munish was picked up and taken to the Phase 9 park, where he was attacked by three unidentified youths. The attackers tied Munish to a tree and beat him up. Under duress, he was forced to transfer Rs 1,000 via Google Pay from his own account. When that wasn't enough, the assailants threatened to kill him unless he arranged more money. Fearing for his life, Munish managed to get Rs 15,000 transferred from his uncles—all sent directly to the attackers' accounts. After securing the money, the culprits snatched his silver chain and mobile phone and fled. The DSP said the breakthrough came after the minor was apprehended and questioned, revealing the identities of the remaining suspects. The minor was produced before a juvenile court and sent to a correctional facility. The other four were presented in court and remanded to police custody for two days for further investigation and recovery of stolen items. Police are currently working to recover the mobile phone, silver chain, and the money transferred during the incident.
