‘Right to life': Cal HC cites trial delay, grants bail to 2 in 2012 murder case

Kolkata: Citing right to life and liberty and linking a delay in trial with it, the Calcutta High Court recently granted bail to two murder accused following more than 12 years of incarceration. The duo, along with two others, had been accused of killing two of a Kolkata family and their two maids. The murders of 48-year-old Dipak Bhattacharya, who ran a small cable TV business, his 78-year-old bedridden mother Gouri Bhattacharya, and their maids — Mayna Roy and Anima Mondal — took place on Sept 6, 2012. On Sept 9, police arrested four employees of Dipak for the crime. Munna Dhali, Nabu dhali, Rajesh Das and Sattar Mondal were accused of breaking into Dipak's Biren Roy (West) Road house and committing the murders. They could not steal anything and fled as a phone started ringing in the house. Autopsy reports revealed that the victims' throat injuries were due to smothering and manual strangulation. Recently, alleged mastermind Munna and Nabu approached the Calcutta High Court for bail. In Feb 2025, Rajesh was granted bail by a division bench and the high court had cited Article 21 then as well. During the hearing, the state had undertaken to examine five more witnesses and assured completion of probe within two months from Feb 24. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like O novo dispositivo que os idosos usam para ajudar na neuropatia (dor nos nervos) A arte do herbalismo Undo On April 24, the high court turned down the bail plea of another co-accused, Sattar. While hearing Munna and Nabu's bail pleas, the HC was told by their counsel that trial in the case had started on Sept 20, 2013, and only 44 witnesses had been examined in 12 years, with bleak chances of trial ending soon. Noting that there had been no progress in the trial, Justice Suvra Ghosh said: "Without touching the merits of the case and solely on the anvil of Article 21 of the Constitution of India, prayer for bail is allowed. JD(U) neta urges CM to lift ban on toddy

Patna: CM Nitish Kumar was confronted with a bold demand to lift the ban on toddy during his visit to the JD(U) office on Monday with one party leader warning of electoral consequences if the matter is ignored. Munna Chaudhary, who identifies as vice-president of JD(U)'s scheduled caste cell, told reporters that the CM directed party's state president Umesh Singh Kushwaha to look into the issue and submit a detailed report. Munna urged Nitish to exclude toddy from the state's liquor prohibition law, arguing that it contains no liquor. "Toddy is not liquor. The Pasi community, which depends on toddy for livelihood, has suffered greatly since the blanket ban in 2016," he said. He added that over 500 Pasis have died from falls while tapping toddy, yet victim families have not received any compensation. "Toddy is an integral part of our community's life and livelihood. The govt must pay attention to our plight," he said. Nitish's impromptu visit to the party office surprised many and Munna seized the opportunity to hand over a letter outlining his demands. The issue has gained political traction with RJD leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav promising to lift the toddy ban if elected to power. NDA ally and HAM(S) patron Jitan Ram Manjhi has also repeatedly called for relaxation of prohibition laws.

Two Bangladeshis sent to prison for illegal entry into India

CHENNAI: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has secured a conviction against two Bangladeshis, who had entered India using forged documents, from a Chennai court recently. The agency had in November 2023 invoked charges under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and started probe in the case after taking permission from the Union Home Ministry. However, in the final chargesheet, the agency did not allege violation under UAPA and framed charges only under forgery and violation of Passports Rules & Foreigners Act. Shahabuddin Hossain and Munna alias Noor Karim living near Chengalpattu, but originally from Chittagong in Bangladesh, were arrested in November 2023. Mobile phones seized from them had photos of Aadhar cards, PAN and Bangladeshi numbers in their contact list. The call log contained many calls made to Bangladeshi numbers. Witnesses also produced Bangladeshi national ID cards of the accused that were forensically examined. In custody, the accused allegedly confessed to NIA personnel to have entered India illegally in connivance with traffickers and touts as part of a large human trafficking network of Bangladeshi nationals entering India illegally. At the end of the trial, the accused pleaded guilty and were sentenced to two years imprisonment. They have already spent around one year and seven months in prison which will be adjusted against the final sentence, the court ordered.

2 held for e-rick driver's murder in Roorkee

Roorkee: Two men from Salempur village near Roorkee have been arrested in connection with the murder of Munna, a local e-rickshaw driver whose acid-burned body was found on May 18 near a highway. The accused, Ashish Kumar and Vikrant alias Rolla, allegedly killed Munna while attempting to steal batteries from his e-rickshaw to repay a loan. Police said Ashish was under pressure to clear a loan instalment of Rs 7,500 from a private lender. In a bid to raise the amount, he conspired with Vikrant to steal the batteries, which they believed could fetch over Rs 3,500 each in the resale market. On May 16, the duo hired Munna to drive them towards Manglaur for Rs 500. En route, they stopped at a secluded location and consumed alcohol with Munna. Once he was heavily intoxicated, Vikrant began removing the e-rickshaw batteries. Munna resisted, leading to a scuffle during which Ashish allegedly strangled him with a belt. The two then dragged Munna's body behind an under-construction wall, poured acid on his face to prevent identification, and wrapped the body in a black tarpaulin sheet. Later, Ashish transported the stolen batteries home on his motorcycle and hid them. Police recovered both batteries and Munna's mobile phone from his possession. The breakthrough in the case came when the accused attempted to sell the stolen batteries at a local repair shop. They were arrested on Friday during the sale attempt. "We reviewed CCTV footage from over 500 locations and analyzed call records and location data, which placed Munna and Ashish together. During interrogation, the accused also admitted to committing petty thefts in the past," said SSP Pramendra Singh Dobal on Saturday.
