(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Malaysia has formally expressed its intention to seek re-election to the council of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) for the 2027-2030 term, communications minister Fahmi Fadzil said today. Fahmi, who is in Tokyo for the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT) Ministers' meeting, said he had conveyed Malaysia's aspiration to APT member states in a bid to secure their continued support. 'As a council member, Malaysia plays a role in shaping ITU's strategic policies, overseeing the implementation of decisions made at global conferences, and representing the interests of the Asia-Pacific and developing nations in telecommunications and digital infrastructure,' he said in a Facebook post. The ITU council acts as the governing body between plenipotentiary conferences and is responsible for coordinating the union's broad policy agenda. Fahmi also held bilateral meetings with Japanese internal affairs and communications minister Murakami Seiichiro and China's vice-minister of industry and information technology, Zhang Yunming, to discuss digital cooperation and Malaysia's bid. Malaysia has also been invited to the upcoming ITU summits in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, this September and in Baku, Azerbaijan, in November. During a separate meeting with ITU development bureau director Cosmas Luckyson Zavazava, Fahmi reiterated the government's commitment to provide safer internet access and expand digital coverage nationwide.
