Morocco Opens Honorary Consulate in Bolivia
Rabat – Morocco has opened an honorary consulate in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia's most populous city and a key economic center. The inauguration took place on Wednesday, April 23, during a formal ceremony that was attended by high-level officials from both countries.
Moroccan Ambassador Amin Chaoudri led the ceremony and officially appointed Murillo Dencker honorary council. Dencker is a respected figure with a long career in business, academia and culture; all qualities that will be key for Morocco to build stronger local partnerships.
Chaoudri emphasized Morocco's intention to reinforce its ties with Bolivia, especially through Santa Cruz, which he described as a strategic location for expanding bilateral cooperation, adding that the new consulate will help boost collaboration in key areas including trade, investment tourism, culture and academic exchange.
The Moroccan ambassador also reaffirmed Morocco's commitment to a strong and respectful partnership with Bolivia, based on shared values of 'national sovereignty and non-interference in internal affairs.'
The ceremony was attended by the president of the Santa Cruz department legislative assembly, as well as other prominent political, economic, academic, religious and military figures.
On his part, Talamas welcomed the opening of Morocco, noting that it is the first Arab and African diplomatic presence in the region. He expressed interest in building ties between his assembly and the Moroccan parliament, and further praised Morocco as a stable, emerging country that is a model of South-South cooperation, especially in fields like renewable energy, education and tourism.
This move marks a significant step in Morocco's engagement in the region, especially that Morocco has resumed relations with the South-American country in 2020 after it cut-off ties with the self-proclaimed Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR).
Earlier this month, Morocco's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Borita, met with the President of the Andean Parliament — representing the Andean community in Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru — where the governing body reaffirmed Morocco's sovereignty over its southern provinces in the Western Sahara.
