Madras HC asks cops to decide on nod for Muruga meet by Thursday
MADURAI: The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Monday directed the Madurai police to decide by June 12 on Hindu Munnani's application seeking permission to hold a spiritual conference titled 'Muruga Bakthargalin Aanmeega Maanadu' on June 22. Justice B Pugalendhi also permitted the organisation to install miniatures of the six abodes of Lord Muruga at the event venue – Amma Thidal – near Vandiyur toll plaza but restrained it from performing pujas until a final decision is made. The case has been posted for further hearing on June 13. The court passed the order on a petition filed by Hindu Munnani state secretary S Muthukumar, challenging the police's denial of permission to set up the miniatures. In his affidavit, Muthukumar stated that the intention was to provide devotees an opportunity to witness all six abodes of Lord Muruga in one place. He added that pujas and distribution of prasadam were planned from June 10 to June 22, along with narration of the sthalapuranam and special features of each shrine. On the day of the conference, a collective prayer with the chanting of Kandha Shasti Kavasam and Thiruppugal would be held, he noted.

Muruga, God of Kali Yuga
The sight of His flag (rooster) and mount (peacock) is enough to send Lord Muruga's devotees into ecstasy. Chanting His name even once, with faith, will fetch immeasurable benefits. Hailed as the God of Kali Yuga, Muruga, also known as Kartikeya and Subrahmanya, rushes to shower His grace on His devotees who place their full faith in him, said Dr. Sudha Seshayyan. There are numerous examples of Muruga showering His benediction on the devotees and offering them His protection. Centuries ago, Muruga came to the aid of Arunagirinathar. Due to a number of wrong decisions and lifestyle, Arunagirinadhar's life hit rock bottom and he was on the verge of committing suicide. He was berating himself and asking God's forgiveness alternatively while attempting to end it all. However, Muruga appeared on the temple tower, prevented him from taking the extreme step. Following Muruga's advice, Arunagirinadhar stayed quiet for a few days; his mind became calm and experiencing Muruga with his mind and soul, he composed Tiruppugazh, marking the beginning of an illustrious life as a great, devotional composer, with the reputation of someone who could converse with Lord Muruga Himself. This was sufficient to rouse the ire of another poet, who, out of envy, complained to the king that poet Arunagirinadhar was duplicitous and should prove in public that Muruga would answer his call. The king directed the poet to prove the accuser wrong. When Arunagirinadhar sang a few lines, saying everyone, including His parents Siva and Parvati were dancing, Muruga did not appear, but when the post said Muruga's in-laws were dancing, Muruga immediately appeared for all to see. Likewise, in December 1923, when Pamban Swami was walking on Thambu Chetty Street, a jutka made him lose his balance and fall, with the wheel going over his left leg. Doctors informed the 73-year-old Pamban Swami that the fracture would not heal and suggested amputation. The seer refused, but accepted minimal care. He kept chanting Muruga's name while his assistant recited Shanmuga Kavacham. On January 6, Pamban Swami saw a fleeting image of a peacock, spreading its wings and passing, followed by a younger peacock. 'Muruga, you have come,' cried Pamban Swami. The peacocks vanished at once. That night a beautiful baby suddenly appeared on his cot and Pamban Swami knew he was receiving Muruga's grace. The next morning, doctors were stunned to notice that the fracture on Pamban Swami's leg had healed overnight.

Kala Sadhana, an annual performance in memory of Rukmini Devi
Several students pass out of an institution but some take efforts to share what they have imbibed. S. Premnath is one such. After graduating from Kalakshetra, he went on to establish a dance institution in North Chennai. He named it Rukmini Devi Natyakshetra. Every year, he organises a tribute festival titled 'Kala Sadhana' at Kalakshetra as an offering to its founder. The 2025 edition, held recently, began with the feet of six dancers seen below a thiraiseelai (curtain), held by two other dancers. It was a graceful introduction to the six Karthigai pengal, who are intrinsic to the story of the birth of Muruga. This aesthetically conceived sequence formed a prelude to the presentation of 'Arupadai Veedu'. Beginning with the episode where Ganesha and Muruga fight over a mango, the other sequences focussed on the temples that form the Arupadai Veedu. Aesthetically choreographed, the section dedicated to the temples had dancers portraying their distinct features through well-designed movement patterns and aptly-conceived sancharis. The story of Soorapadman was the highlight here. From the vibrant dancing of the demonesses in the court and the entry of Soorapadman to the ensuing battle between him and Muruga, the sequences were developed as an engrossing costume drama. An imaginative element was three apsaras witnessing the battle from behind a transparent curtain. It was a nice way to use the stage space. The musical score was a fine blend of Carnatic ragas, chosen according to the scene. Vocalist Hariprasanth's bhava-rich voice added to the appeal of the production. M. Srikrishna on the mridangam, M.V. Srinivas on the violin, Bhagyalakshmi on the flute, Shyam on the tambura and Gunasekar on the conch offered amazing support. S. Premnath wielded the cymbals . The production, with well-coordinated costumes, sets, lighting and music, and dance composition was a heartfelt tribute to Rukmini Devi.
