Gunmen kill 25 in restive central Nigeria state
Deadly competition for land between Fulani herders and Christian farmers left 25 dead in Benue state, Nigeria, with fears of further violence. Gunmen killed 25 people in two attacks across north-central Nigeria's Benue state over the weekend, local authorities told AFP Monday, the latest violence in a region known for deadly land disputes and reprisals. Attackers killed 14 people on Sunday in the community of Ankpali, said Adam Ochega, chairman of the Apa local government council, warning that 'there are still some threats here and there'. Muslim ethnic Fulani nomadic herders have long clashed with settled farmers, many of whom are Christian, in Benue over access to land and resources. In a recent report, Amnesty International tallied 6,896 people killed over the last two years in Benue, part of Nigeria's so-called Middle Belt, a mixed-religious region where such disputes often take on a sectarian dimension. A police spokeswoman confirmed the attack but did not provide a toll. In a similar attack Sunday evening on Naka village, of Gwer West local government area, 11 people were killed by what authorities said were suspected Fulani militias. 'So far we have recovered 11 dead bodies and five people are confirmed injured,' Gwer West council chairman Ormin Victor told AFP. Last month, 44 people were killed in a span of four days in Gwer West. Motives for the violence in that attack were not clear, but Victor blamed the 'coordinated attacks' on Fulani cattle herders. 'The attackers invaded our community… were shooting anyhow, they killed many people,' he told AFP. The attackers don't 'want us to cultivate our lands, they keeping on attacking and killing us,' he alleged. Deadly competition for land Herders across the region say they are also the victims of deadly attacks by farmers, land grabs and cattle poisonings. Land used by farmers and herders in central Nigeria is coming under stress from climate change and human expansion, sparking deadly competition for increasingly limited space. ALSO READ: Inside Nigeria's new wave of jihadist attacks Benue has been one of the states hit hardest by such violence between nomadic herders and farmers who blame herdsmen for destroying farmland with their cattle grazing. When violence flares, weak policing all but guarantees indiscriminate reprisal attacks, which often occur across communal lines. A spate of attacks across Benue and neighbouring Plateau state left more than 150 people dead in April alone. Land grabbing, political and economic tensions between locals and those considered outsiders, as well as an influx of hardline Muslim and Christian preachers, have heightened divisions in Plateau state in recent decades. – By: © Agence France-Presse

Gladiators viewers surprised to see Legend change the event rules in final
Tonight's Gladiators final (April 12) saw two contenders run up The Wall with no head start against their Gladiator opponents after Legend called for the change. Referee Mark Clattenburg agreed to the change, as did the two contenders. Joe, a contender in the final, was stripped of his head start against Apollo but managed to win the event. However, Legend beat Mus after a change in the rules – something he's not been able to do in the last two times the pair have raced up The Wall. Fans of the show, took to X to share their reaction to the change. One said: 'one on one, in a straight race this is different. are they going to make this a permanent thing on the wall #gladiators'. Another commented: 'SCENES #Gladiators'. A third said: 'The rules have changed. gladiator Vs contender in a straight race. #Gladiators Come on, Mus, come on Joe.' Amanda, Aneila, Mus and Joe will battle it out for the two trophies but only one male and one female get to take them home. Gladiators contender claims unwanted record before reaching semi-finals
Gladiators quarter-finalist Mus has set an unwanted record on the BBC gameshow. Taking to the Collision bridge on Saturday, 1 March, the nifty contender went up against man-mountains Bionic, Viper, Phantom and Steel in a bid to add 10 more points to his tally, following rival Joe's two-pointer effort. Sadly for him, though, Mus was pushed onto the crash mats in a matter of seconds, earning no points whatsoever. Speaking to the surprisingly unbothered contender, co-host Bradley Walsh was forced to point out something Mus didn't need to hear at that moment. "Mus, just let to you know: you have set a Collision record," he said. "You got knocked off in 4.4 seconds..." Any record is better than no record, so why not?" Next, Mus went on to steamroll through The Wall - leaving an embittered Bionic to make 'mum jokes' on the ground - before eventually beating Joe at the final Eliminator stage. He became the first official 2025 semi-finalist on the night. After smashing Mus to pieces on Duel during his big debut, newcomer Hammer (real name Tom Wilson) told the Sheffield Arena crowd that his "business is taking down contenders." On social media, Gladiators viewers were simultaneously amused by his apparent similarity to Joe Wicks and impressed with Hammer's skills. "I think #Hammer will be a great new [addition] to the show," wrote one person on X. "I thought Hammer was Pete Wicks for a minute," added another.
