Iraq Launches 'Eduba' School Construction Project
By John Lee.
Iraq's Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani launched the execution phase of multiple school construction projects in five provinces via video conference on Sunday, as part of Phase One of the Eduba Project, implemented through the private sector under the Iraq Development Fund.
The first phase includes school construction in: Sabaa Qusour, Baghdad
Al-Hisn, Al-Mahaweel, Babylon
Al-Anbari, Al-Hartha, Basra
Al-Halayjia, Al-Rumaitha, Muthanna
Amiriya Al-Somoud, Fallujah, Anbar
Al-Sudani emphasized that Eduba represents a new government approach to school construction via private sector partnerships, using modern designs and a service-based payment model. Companies will handle maintenance for the contract duration, with technical oversight by advisory bodies.
He noted Iraq's urgent need for 10,000 school buildings, particularly in underserved areas, and stressed that traditional methods cannot meet demand. The government has designated land for 600 schools in Phase One, with expansion potential, aiming to eliminate double shifts and address regional disparities.
The Prime Minister praised cooperation with the Iraq Development Fund in securing land and reiterated his zero-tolerance policy for project delays. He urged collaboration among all stakeholders to ensure success, highlighting the job opportunities these projects create for Iraqi youth in the private sector.
