NHS dental practice in Cornwall announces closure leaving patients 'so sad'

Patients of a community dentist in Cornwall have shared their sadness following an announcement that it is due to close permanently at the end of next month. My Dentist, the umbrella company for the Trewirgie dental practice in Redruth, has sent a letter to patients stating that from May 30, the practice will cease providing dental services and close permanently on that date. The letter states that "difficulties experienced in recruiting dentists to the area" and "increasing running costs" have prevented the practice from "operating sustainably." 'The decision to close the practice has not been taken lightly,' the letter said. 'Unfortunately, difficulties experienced in recruiting dentists to the area and increasing running costs have prevented the practice from operating sustainably. 'We understand this will be disappointing news.' The practice is now urging current patients who are undergoing dental treatment to complete this by May 30. My Dentist is also advising Trewirgie patients on the next steps once the practice is closed. They said: 'To help you to find another NHS dental practice, at the point you need your next routine dental check-up, you can search using the NHS website located at If you have an urgent dental need, please contact 111.' The letter ends with a touching note to past and present patients. It says: 'We thank you for entrusting the practice with your previous dental needs, and we wish you well with your future dental health. 'We are sorry that we have had to take this decision, and we thank you for your support to the practice during your time as a patient with us.' However, the announcement has left some of its patients upset by the news. One person said: 'For those still trying to get appointments at Trewirgie dentists and failing dismally, this is why. (I) think we all knew it was coming though! 'So sad, I've been registered there my entire life. Ms Milne was my dentist for about 25 years, just the best. '(My) fathers just told me it's the only dentist he's ever been at too! Makes it even sadder!' A spokesperson for My Dentist told the Packet: "In common with many dental practices in Cornwall and across the UK, we continue to face recruitment challenges due to an acute shortage of dentists. "As a result, unfortunately, we have been forced to make the difficult decision to close our practice on Trewirgie Road in Redruth on 30th May. "We are writing to all our patients to inform them of this and to provide advice on alternative places where they may be able to access dental care following our closure.'
