New Ross children collect book bags at local library

New Ross Standard The librarians at New Ross Library have had lots of little visitors recently, as the My Little Library Book Bag has become increasingly popular among children taking the big leap into their new primary school setting this September. The bags available from the library are free for every child starting school in 2025, aged four to six, and the contents are chosen carefully to help children navigate starting school, with books and resources for parents and children. Children and their parents or guardians can collect the bags at New Ross Library, or any public library, and the bags and contents are also available as Gaeilge. 'We hope that once you visit the library to pick up their book bag, you and your family will come back regularly to keep their bag filled up with borrowed books and to take part in the wide range of children's events we have to offer at the library,' said the librarians. The New Ross Library staff, Thomas, Caroline, Emma, Frances and Lucija, are looking forward to the children dropping in to collect their free book bags and begin their library membership journey.

Starting school with a goodie bag from Sligo Libraries

Each bag contains two free books, a library card holder, and a range of resources for parents and children to support the transition to primary school. The bags are available in Irish or in English. Cathaoirleach Cllr. Declan Bree launched the My Little Library Book Bag initiative 2025 in Sligo Central Library with children and staff from Cosy Cats preschool. Cathaoirleach Cllr. Bree said: 'Supporting our young children as they begin their educational journey is vital for building a brighter future. 'I am delighted to see Sligo Libraries leading the way with this inspiring initiative, fostering a love of books and learning for all our children.' The My Little Library Book Bag initiative is a collaboration between libraries, the Department of Rural and Community Development, and the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth as part of the First 5 Strategy. My Little Library Book Bags are available from 9th May 2025 at Sligo Central Library, Ballymote Community Library, Tubbercurry Community Library, or Enniscrone Branch Library.
