Harlem grandmother asks for repairs at NYCHA apartment
HARLEM, Manhattan (PIX11) — The family of a Harlem Grandmother of ten reached out to PIX11's Monica Morales in desperate need of repairs. Natalie Rosa says it has been an emotional rollercoaster watching her mom struggle to get repairs in her home here at the Lincoln Houses in Harlem. More Local News 79-year-old Doris Green lives in an apartment where her ceiling is falling apart. Green says she has to sleep in her living room now because her bedroom ceiling has chipping, peeling paint, and water damage. Three generations of women are living in this home in Harlem. Green is the matriarch of the family. The problem, Green says, started back in 2023. A NYCHA spokesperson tells PIX11 News, 'NYCHA staff visited the resident today and have scheduled the necessary environmental inspections, testing, and skilled trades work for the unit. Cancer survivor needs repairs to restroom in NYCHA unit
NEW YORK (PIX11) – From a cancer survivor who is inspiring others with her battle to get well and get repairs to a mother and son who graduated from college together and got their dream jobs. We first met 73-year-old grandmother of seven, Luz Amaro, from the Jefferson houses back in May of 2024. A breast cancer survivor, she was battling for her life, and for two years, fighting for repairs in her kitchen. More Local News Her kitchen looked like a construction zone. You know we fixed it. It gets better. Valerie Fitch from a non-profit called Circle of Generosity was watching and gave Amaro a check to help her remodel her kitchen. Now, almost a year later, her son Jamie called PIX11's Monica Moralwa again. The news this time is that her cancer has returned. She may have lost weight, but not her will to live and her strong spirit. Amaro says she needs repairs in her bathroom next. A NYCHA spokesperson tells PIX11 News, 'NYCHA staff are visiting the unit and will work to address the resident's concerns as soon as possible. NYCHA encourages residents in need of assistance to call the Customer Contact Center at 718-707-7771 or submit work tickets through the MyNYCHA application.' Another inspiring mother and son. PIX11 first met Carolette McKenzie and her son, Deondre, back in 2023, when they graduated together from Bronx Community College—a big update. Carolette now works as an ICU nurse. Deondre is working in the criminal justice sector as an NYPD officer in transit in Manhattan. If you have a story, reach out to Monica Morales at monica@ Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Bronx NYCHA apartments have been dealing with low water pressure since August, tenants say
Several Bronx residents are claiming they haven't been able to take a hot bath or shower for months, due to extremely low water pressure or no water at all. Tenants at the Patterson Houses want answers from NYCHA. Daisy Dougwillo and T. Vann live on the 13th floor one of the development's buildings. "Since August, we have no hot water. The water doesn't come up. When it comes up, it drips. You can see right now it's trying to work. It's turning on and off," Dougwillo said. They say they've filed multiple complaints with NYCHA and the building's leasing office, but have yet to have any success getting hot water in their apartments. "I would love to take a nice, hot bath. It's terrible. Come home from work, and I got a bowl of water to wash up, day, night, and it's frustrating," Vann said. The women shared they currently have to go to great lengths to do things like bathe and wash dishes. "If you see, I have a pot here. If you see behind you, I have a big pot that I had to purchase. That's the only way that I can do the little bit of dishes, to bathe, to clean my floors. I have to boil water," Dougwillo said. Dougwillo said it takes hours just to get enough water to give her daughter a bath. "I just want them to fix the water. Like I said, I've been here 27 years. I've never had this problem ... I expect to be able to take a shower when I come home for work," Vann said. Earlier this week NYCHA released a statement to CBS News New York saying, in part, "NYCHA is actively checking apartments on the top floors for water pressure issues and promptly making necessary repairs to the buildings pumps to remedy this issue. NYCHA encourages residents in need of assistance to call the Customer Contact Center at 718-707-7771 or submit work tickets through the MyNYCHA application."
