Malaysia urges Myanmar to extend ceasefire

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has sent another appeal to Myanmar to extend the ceasefire which is set to expire tomorrow. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the appeal was conveyed to both the Chairman of Myanmar's State Administration Council, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, as well as Myanmar National Unity Government Prime Minister Mahn Win Khaing Than. "We are monitoring the situation and have appealed to both the senior general and the NUG prime minister. "The ceasefire is critical to ensure that humanitarian assistance reaches all parties without discrimination," he told reporters after officiating the groundbreaking ceremony of the Rumah Belia Madani and affordable housing project in Mukim Batu today. Anwar said there were allegations that both sides had failed to fully observe the ceasefire. "That is why we've sent another appeal to extend it (the ceasefire) and make sure to respect the ceasefire, otherwise the people will suffer," he said. Previously, both parties pledged to implement a ceasefire and ensure the safety of humanitarian workers, especially crucial following a deadly earthquake in Myanmar in late March.
