NBA star Klay Thompson suffers heartbreaking personal loss
NBA star Klay Thompson has suffered a heartbreaking personal loss after his team failed to make it to the postseason. The 35-year-old's beloved dog, Rocco, who has been by his side throughout his entire NBA career, has passed away at age 13. Thompson's father, Mychal, announced the devastating news of the English bulldog's death during an appearance on the 'Mason & Ireland' radio show Wednesday. 'As Mase and Ireland always say, when someone dear has departed, "Hail fellow well met,"' Thompson said. 'We had to put Rocco, Klay's dog, down over the weekend.' Mychal shared that Rocco was put down on Saturday but insisted that 'it was time.' 'We were all sad, but Rocco had a great, long life,' he added. 'So today's game is dedicated to the memory of our service men and women, and to Rocco.' Rocco shared his own slice of the limelight over the years as his owner rocketed to NBA stardom after Thompson adopted him in his rookie year. Thompson, who spent his first 13 seasons in the league with the Golden State Warriors before joining the Dallas Mavericks in 2024, even referred to the pet as his 'son.' Rocco had his own Instagram page, which featured several snaps of the pup and the four-time NBA champion. 'My first memory of Rocco is picking him up from the breeder at the time in the valley. And he was just a little puppy,' Thompson told last year. Now, he's a big all grown bulldog and great companion. He loves me unconditionally and I feel the same about him.

Mychal Thompson makes outlandish Cooper Flagg, Lakers prediction
Mychal Thompson makes outlandish Cooper Flagg, Lakers prediction On Monday, the Dallas Mavericks stunned the NBA by winning the draft lottery and therefore the right to take Cooper Flagg, the Duke University freshman phenom, with the No. 1 overall pick in next month's draft. It was a huge piece of serendipity for a franchise that had been beleaguered ever since it had sent Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers for the bargain basement price of Anthony Davis, Max Christie and one future first-round draft pick. Fans and pundits alike have been lambasting the franchise ever since, and shortly after the trade, it suffered several injuries to key players and ended up missing the playoffs. Now, assuming they do take Flagg, the Mavericks should have a bright immediate and long-term future, even though star guard Kyrie Irving will miss at least the first half of next season due to a torn ACL. Flagg is a do-everything 6-foot-9 forward who excels on both ends of the floor and has been compared by some to Hall of Famer Scottie Pippen. Former Lakers big man and two-time NBA champion Mychal Thompson predicted in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that Dallas will trade Flagg to the Lakers in five years. This was an obvious dig at the Mavs for sending Doncic to L.A. after Doncic had spent six-and-a-half seasons with them. Thompson is a known jokester, so one has to assume he posted that comment at least partly in jest. This time, however, the Mavs appear to have a strong team, at least on paper, starting with Davis and Irving (when he returns). That cast includes big men Daniel Gafford (who has been mentioned as a trade candidate for L.A.) and Dereck Lively II and forward P.J. Washington Jr. At the very least, Lively, Washington and Christie can be building blocks around Flagg for the next five-plus years even after Davis and Irving have moved on.

Klay's father states son is ‘stuck in purgatory' with Mavericks
Klay's father states son is 'stuck in purgatory' with Mavericks originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area Klay Thompson and the Dallas Mavericks are headed in a completely different direction than the Warriors right now. The former Golden State guard signed a free-agent contract with Dallas last offseason, and it's safe to say his 2024-25 NBA season has not gone the way he hoped it would. Just take his father, Mychal's, word for it. Mychal Thompson (@champagnennuts) spoke on his son Klay's experience in Dallas since the Luka trade. — ESPN Los Angeles (@ESPNLosAngeles) March 6, 2025 'No, no not at all,' Mychal Thompson said Thursday on ESPN Los Angeles' 'Mason & Ireland' show when a caller brought up Klay not expecting the Mavericks' season to unfold the way it has when he signed. 'He thought with Luka [Dončić] and Kyrie he had a chance to get back to the Finals. Obviously Luka left. When I told him [Anthony Davis] is coming, you still got a chance to get to the Finals because AD's that good. Then he's hurt. And then [Daniel] Gafford got hurt and then [Dereck] Lively got hurt. 'So yeah, Klay is stuck in purgatory right now, and if they hang on to the 10th seed, that will be the story of the year in the NBA. Because I think they're going to lose 10 in a row.' The unfortunate series of events, to put it lightly, that the Mavericks and their fans have experienced this season, including the stunning Dončić trade and the injuries to Davis, Gafford, Lively and now Irving, have presented Dallas (32-31) a very difficult path back to the playoffs this season. However, if the Mavericks were to get some of their injured stars back down the stretch, Mychal Thompson believes they still have a chance to make it through the NBA Play-In Tournament. 'If you get AD back, if you get the other two bigs back, you've got a chance at least to get to the first round and to try and get out of it,' Thompson said. 'But without Kyrie, they can forget about going to the Finals.' That's fair. Download and follow the Dubs Talk Podcast
