BREAKING NEWS: Newcastle's acting MM survives shooting
Newcastle's acting municipal manager, Dr Dumisani Thabethe, is fortunate to be alive after surviving a shooting on Wednesday evening, June 18.
According to municipal communications officer, Mthandeni Myende, Thabethe was driving home when the incident occurred.
'The matter is currently under investigation by the SAPS. At this stage, the circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear, and no further information is available regarding the motive or those responsible,' said Myende.
He added that the municipality would not comment or speculate further while the investigation is ongoing.
'The municipality is providing the necessary support to Thabethe's family and colleagues during this difficult time,' he said.
Myende also confirmed that the municipality is reviewing all relevant safety protocols in light of the incident.
He concluded by calling on members of the public and the media to respect the privacy of Thabethe and his family and to allow the investigation to unfold without interference.
'The Newcastle Municipality will continue to cooperate fully with law enforcement and will issue further updates via official channels as verified information becomes available,' he said.
