Man arrested after fight leads to fatal shooting in South Anchorage, police say
Apr. 17—A man was shot and killed Wednesday afternoon in South Anchorage following an altercation outside in a neighborhood, police said.
Mykal Nelson, 24, was arrested Thursday on charges of first- and second-degree murder, according to an Anchorage Police Department update Thursday afternoon.
The shooting on the 2300 block of East 66th Avenue was initially reported as a disturbance with a firearm just after 5 p.m., according to police. Officers found a man shot in the upper body, police said. He was taken to the hospital and died.
Initial indications are that a fight broke out between the man and Nelson, who "produced a gun and discharged multiple rounds striking the victim at least one time in the upper body," the update said.
Police did not answer additional questions, including whether the men knew each other. Several people were taken to the department for questioning, police said.
Police described the shooting as an isolated incident with no threat to public safety.
On Wednesday, the department's crime scene team was processing the scene in an area between Stella Place and O'Brien Street, police said.
The department asked anyone with information about the shooting, including surveillance video, to contact police dispatch at 311 (option 1) or 907-786-8900 (option 0). Anonymous tips can be submitted via Crime Stoppers.
