The Pattullo bridge will be completely closed to vehicle traffic over the long weekend, according to the contractor responsible for construction on the busy crossing.
The closure will take effect on Friday, May 16 at 9 p.m. and reopen on Tuesday, May 20 at 5 a.m.
'Excavation will be taking place across the roadways, blocking access to the bridge, and bridge lanes will be occupied by equipment to complete the work,' a notice from Fraser Crossing Partners says.
Drivers are being advised to use the Port Mann or Alex Fraser bridges as alternate routes. The N19 night bus will be rerouted, and riders are being warned to expect 30 additional minutes of travel time as a result.
Cyclist and pedestrian access will be unaffected.
The construction will proceed 24/7 while the bridge is closed and people who live in the area are being told to expect noise while the work is underway.
A new, four-lane bridge is expected to open some time later this year at which point the existing bridge will be removed. The estimated cost of the project is $1.637 billion.
