NCAA vs. NAIA: Explaining the key differences
NCAA vs. NAIA: Explaining the key differences LSU Shreveport won the NAIA National Championship Friday, 13-7 over Southeastern, the first national title for any sport in school history. The Pilots need their season at 59-0, the first undefeated season in collegiate baseball history. The NAIA and NCAA are often confused, but they're separate organizations. The main differences between the two governing bodies are their size, structure and goals. The NCAA, which is significantly larger, has over 1,100 member schools and around 500,000 student-athletes across three divisions — I, II and III. The NAIA is made up of 250 members with around 77,000 student-athletes with one division. The NCAA, especially at the Division I level, emphasizes high-level competition with large budgets and world-class facilities. The NAIA schools don't have the same spending power. However, NAIA schools can offer scholarships, much like a D-II college can. The NAIA also grants more flexibility when it comes to admission standards. The NCAA typically maintains stricter academic guidelines that aren't found at the NAIA level. While both entities encourage fair and healthy competition among its student-athletes, the financial implications and talent levels are what separate the play of NCAA and NAIA institutions.

LSU Shreveport completes unbeaten season; wins 1st national championship
LEWISTON, Idaho (KTAL/KMSS) — The LSU Shreveport baseball team made history Friday night winning the NAIA National Championship with a 13-7 win over Southeastern (Fla.) in the World Series title game. The Pilots (59-0) fell behind 4-0 in the 2nd inning but never flinched. Jose Sallorin drove in two runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning with a bases loaded single up the middle. Shreveport scored three runs in the inning to pull within one. With the Pilots trailing 7-6 in the bottom of the 6th inning Jackson Syring belted a solo homerun over the centerfield fence. You could feel the confidence building with one swing of the bat. The very next hitter, Ian Montz drove the ball over the right-centerfield wall to give LSUS the lead for good. Ryan Davenport and Sallorin drove in three runs each in the win. While Brock Lucas and Draven Ziegler didn't have their best stuff through the first four innings of the game on the mound, giving up seven runs on six hits, Kenneth Schechter was brilliant in relief. Schechter went four innings, while giving up no runs on two hits while striking out two to pick up the win. Ace Isaac Rohde came on in relief and pitched the final inning of the game. The Pilots extended the longest win streak by a college baseball team at any level to 59 games. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Charlotte Football Preview 2025: New Coaches, New Look, New Hope for the 49ers
It was an interesting idea that didn't work. Now Charlotte is going the more conventional Poggi went from being a key assistant at Michigan to the Charlotte head coach in 2023, but the former hedge-fund manager didn't have a whole lot of luck getting the 49ers going - they won the last two games after he left - going 6-16 in his two has just one winning season in its ten years as an FBS program, and now it's up to Tim Albin to make the program a winner. A long-time assistant under Frank Solich at Ohio, Albin - who also won an NAIA National Championship at Northwestern Oklahoma State in 1999 - took over the reins in 2021, had a rough first year, and then went 30-10 with two bowl wins and a MAC is still a young Charlotte program. It has plenty of positives, but this is a total building job - it's not even a rebuild - with almost no returning talent, a new staff, and …Hope. Albin is a good one. It might take a bit, but the 49ers will soon start winning. Charlotte 49ers Preview 2025: Offense X CFN, Fiu | CFN Facebook | Bluesky Fiu, CFN- The offense couldn't complete passes, couldn't keep the chains moving, and turned it over too much, but it started to pick it up late. The good and the bad news are pretty much the same - almost no one is back from last year's attack.- Step One is to get the offensive line in place. Under Albin, Ohio was 12th in the nation in rushing last season, but that team had the parts. Charlotte gets back Jonny King at center with the transfer portal helping to fill the key gaps. Don Chaney was a good running back at Miami and got in a little work at Louisville last year - he'll be the main man. There's decent depth for the rotation, and now …- There has to be a passing game, and that's ALL about the transfers. Conner Harrell (North Carolina) and Grayson Loftis (Duke) are each decent quarterback options, but all the new wide receivers - most are from Power Four schools - need some seasoning. Tight end Jake Young (Western Carolina) will be an instant target. Charlotte 49ers Preview 2025: Defense - Defensive coordinators Nate Faanes and Kurt Mattix were part of Albin's staff at Ohio. Their defense was ninth in the nation last year, first in the MAC in scoring D, and fourth in the nation against the run. They'll have to make magic with a whole slew of transfers, especially in the corners are new, but there are options. The safeties should be the early stars - Caleb Curtain was fantastic over the last few years at Elon.- The tackles are relatively home grown, but there's not a lot of experience. Jaylon Johnson was a terrific pass rusher at the JUCO level last year, and Braden Mullen was an Ivy League all-star at Dartmouth over the last two years.- On a team that's almost completely starting over, the leading tackler is back. Reid Williford isn't huge, but he cleaned up in the middle of the linebacking corps with 77 stops and two sacks. Outside linebacker Gavin Willis was a tackling machine last season at Bucknell with 129 tackles. Charlotte 49ers Key to the Season Complete more 49ers couldn't move the chains last season mainly because the passing game couldn't hit the midrange throws. They were 131st in the nation in completion percentage, 129th in third down conversions, and even with that they were 4-2 when throwing for more than 200 yards and 0-5 when throwing for fewer, so … Charlotte 49ers Key Player Conner Harrell, QB Grayson Loftis. One of them has to take over the starting quarterback gig and be steady. Harrell got in a little work over the last two seasons at North Carolina hitting 61% of his throws for 560 yards and four scores with three picks, and he can run. Charlotte 49ers Top Transfer, Biggest Transfer Loss Top Transfer In: Don Chaney, RB veteran wasn't able to quite catch on with Louisville last year, but he was a solid part of the Miami rotation as a freshman, was out for most of the next two years, and ran for 478 yards and two scores in 2023. There's plenty of tread on the tires with the talent to be a statistical force in the Transfer Out: O'Mega Blake, WR passing game wasn't always bad last year. Blake averaged almost 25 yards per catch with a team-leading 795 yards and nine touchdowns. He would've been a much-needed no. 1 deep threat target, but now he's at Arkansas. Charlotte 49ers Key Game North Texas, Oct. 24Just how good will Charlotte be by the end of October? November will be a massive problem with three of the last four games on the road. If things are starting to progress in Albin's first year, winning at North Texas might just put the 49ers in a position to go bowling if they can pull this off.- 2025 Charlotte 49ers Schedule Breakdown Charlotte 49ers Top 10 Players 1. Reid Williford, LB Sr.2. Don Chaney, RB Sr.3. Caleb Curtain, S Sr.4. Gavin Willis, LB Jr.5. Braden Mullen, EDGE Sr.6. Treyveon McGee, S Sr.7. Jaylon Johnson, EDGE Jr.8. Jake Young, TE Jr.9. It'll be better than Tim Albin's first year at Ohio - he went 3-9 - but there will be a few too tough losses to get to a The Charlotte 49ers Win Total At … 4.5Likely Wins: Monmouth, Rice50/50 Games: App State, at Army, at East Carolina, North Texas, Temple, UTSA,Likely Losses: at Georgia, North Carolina, at Tulane, at USF © 2025 The Arena Group Holdings, Inc. Mendon record holder Allen running to new opportunity with Goshen College
MENDON — Presley Allen has logged quite a few miles with her feet. The graduating Mendon High School senior has been running for what seems like many years, but she finds herself at a spot now where giving up on that running isn't an option. For the next four years, Allen will continue putting in the distance with Goshen College, where she will extend her academic, cross country, indoor and outdoor track careers. Advertisement The Maple Leafs officially welcomed Allen into the fold and are excited for her to be a part of the squad. "She's a really good person in general. When we recruit, we look for good people, and we definitely see that in her," Goshen associate head coach Lisa Voyles said. "She has 'it.' She's that person who is gonna care about things and has the drive to keep going. She is fine with putting the work in, and I know she's passionate about what she is doing both in sports and academics." Allen is a multi-sport athlete at Mendon, competing in cross country, track and basketball during her time with the Hornets. Ending up as a collegiate athlete really began when she was in middle school, Allen said, and now she can focus on finishing out high school with her future cemented in Goshen. Presley Allen, graduating senior at Mendon High School, will continue her academic and running careers with Goshen College. NOT TOO FAR AWAY: Georgia's not too far away for Hathaway, who will follow her love of horses south Advertisement WHY CHOOSE: Why choose? Smith gets multiple opportunities in one with Olivet "I feel like ever since seventh grade, when I started running year-round, that's when I started to know that I could run in college as well," she said. "It's been a huge goal that I've wanted." A member of the National Honor Society, Allen said she has some ideas on what she plans to study while at Goshen. For the time being, though, deciding on a major has not officially come to fruition, bu she does know it could be something in the exercise science portion of academia. Being injured as a sophomore and attending physical therapy helped spark that interest, Allen said. Advertisement When it comes to success, both Allen and Voyles share some qualities. Allen has consistently been one of the better runners in the area during her time in high school, and she plans to continue that in her final spring track season. Voyles is an eight-time NAIA national champion from her time at Indiana Tech. She was hired by Goshen back in August, making Allen one of her first recruits to campus. Voyles said the process of recruiting has been a learning one but also enjoyable. Goshen has been to the NAIA National Championship in both track and field plus cross country in recent years, a trend they plan to continue. Presley Allen finished her final race for Mendon in 31st position on Saturday. CUVO EXCITED: Constantine's Cuvo excited for throwing opportunity with SMC Advertisement "I really like the coaching staff; they are nice people. I love the campus, and the team was great," Allen said of her time spent with her new colleagues. "They are used to winning, and they take it seriously, but they also make it run, which is great." As Allen prepares to begin another chapter in her life, she still is holding on before completely turning the page. She will miss her coaches and teammates at Mendon, especially running cross country with her sister, Rowan. Allen said she's nervous to be out on her own, but she's excited about having teammates with whom to run at Goshen and training through the college process as an athlete. It will all work out, she believes. Advertisement "I'm excited about running, I know that," she said. Allen believes she has some unfinished business at Mendon as well. She currently owns the school records for the 5K, the mile and the two-mile runs. She has her sights completely set on taking down the record in the 800 run, which currently sits at 2:19. Her best in that event is a 2:25. Six seconds away. "I believe I can do it," Allen said. "I just keep telling myself to keep going."
