Cory Booker makes controversial 'Nazi' gesture at convention, Elon Musk reacts
US senator Cory Booker (Video grab from X @nicksortor) A gesture made by US senator Cory Booker at the California Democratic convention on Saturday is drawing widespread comparisons to a similar move by Elon Musk earlier this year, and now, Musk himself has weighed in. Booker concluded his speech to delegates with an extended-arm gesture that many on social media likened to a Nazi salute — the same controversial comparison that was made when Musk placed his hand on his chest and then extended it outward during Donald Trump's second inauguration. At the time, Musk was harshly criticised by many Democrats, who claimed the move resembled fascist symbolism. Musk defended his gesture, explaining it as a heartfelt message: 'My heart goes out to you.' Now, with Booker, a prominent Democrat, making a near-identical gesture, Musk reacted to the video with an emoji on his X handle. Booker, 56, has not responded to the viral claims. The moment came as Booker addressed delegates, encouraging them to 'get into some good trouble,' quoting the late civil rights icon John Lewis. The senator focused much of his speech on the need to resist US President Donald Trump's agenda and rebuild trust with voters. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo 'I think the Democratic Party lost a lot of elections because people didn't believe that they cared about them,' he said. 'So let's stop worrying about the politics and get more focused on the people.' He went on to stress the importance of activism and creativity in civic engagement. 'I know one thing it's not is sitting down and doing nothing and just watching on TV and getting stuck in a state of sedentary agitation. Everybody has to be taking measures to put the pressure on to change,' he said. However, the speech's closing moment quickly overshadowed the rest of his speech. 'I'm literally shaking right now. Cory Booker is literally Hitler,' one social media user wrote. Another post read, 'Cory Booker does a NAZI SALUTE at the California Democratic Convention HOLY CRAP! LITERALLY HITLER!' Booker, who ran for president in 2020, said after the convention that he's focused on running for reelection to the senate in 2026. When asked about a possible 2028 presidential bid, he replied, '2028 will take care of itself.' Critics have also pointed out that earlier this year, former Trump adviser Steve Bannon faced similar scrutiny for a comparable gesture.

Toby Doeden, Aberdeen businessman, files for South Dakota governor
A second expected entrant to South Dakota's distant gubernatorial race has filed with the state. Aberdeen businessman and conservative activist Toby Doeden filed a statement of organization for "Toby Doeden for South Dakota," a statewide gubernatorial candidate committee established on May 22, according to the South Dakota Secretary of State's website. Doeden has scheduled an event at 5 p.m. CDT, May 28, at Wylie Park Pavilion in Aberdeen. He is expected to publicly announce his campaign for the governor nomination there. Jessica Post, general manager of 5-Star Management LLC, an Aberdeen property management company, is listed as committee treasurer. Doeden is the president of Doeden Investment Group, an investment firm, which includes Post on its staff page. Doeden is the chair of Dakota First Action, a statewide political action committee that boosted populist and anti-carbon pipeline candidates into the state legislature in 2024. Doeden has never held a political office, and he refers to himself as a "successful businessman, a bold conservative, and a dedicated family man" on his website. Politically, Doeden presents a conservative option that aligns with President Donald Trump's "America First" policies and sits farther to the right than other prominent South Dakota's Republicans, like Gov. Larry Rhoden and U.S. Rep. Dusty Johnson, both of whom are anticipated to run for governor but have yet to publicly announce campaigns. Doeden would be the second to enter South Dakota's contest for the job after state House Speaker Jon Hansen, who announced his run for governor along with Speaker Pro Tempore Karla Lems as lieutenant governor in April. Doeden's PAC entered hot water with the state's Republican establishment in October 2024 when he refused to cancel a speaking engagement with then-Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson of North Carolina at a Dakota First Action gala event. Robinson was accused of writing several controversial statements on an online board in the 2000s, including calling himself a "black NAZI," CNN reported. More: Mark Robinson drops speaking slot at SD fundraiser to help with hurricane recovery amid scandal Robinson later dropped the speaking engagement of his own accord and provided a pre-recorded video in order to assist in North Carolina's disaster response following 2024's Hurricane Helene. He later dropped a lawsuit against the network for its reporting. This article originally appeared on Sioux Falls Argus Leader: Aberdeen's Toby Doeden joins race for South Dakota governor

Calls for new Labour mayor to be sacked after photo of him dressed as Adolf Hitler at charity event resurfaces
NAZI BLUNDER Calls for new Labour mayor to be sacked after photo of him dressed as Adolf Hitler at charity event resurfaces Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A NEW Labour mayor who dressed as Adolf Hitler in a shocking resurfaced picture is facing calls to be sacked after being labelled a 'bully' and 'not fit for public office'. Seve Gomez-Aspron MBE was installed into the ambassadorial role at St Helens Borough Council in Merseyside this month - with multiple fellow councillors reportedly storming out in protest. He has also been brought before the council's standards committee in the past over complaints about remarks he made on social media. While cops previously attended the town hall itself to serve Gomez-Aspron with a Police Information Notice in relation to harassment claims made by a member of the public. However, it must be noted, receiving such a notice does not mean an acceptance of wrongdoing and it does not appear any further action was taken. 'Many feel that he is not fit for public office, never mind the prestigious role as mayor.' A reported 11 councillors walked out in protest during the swearing in ceremony on May 14. The Hitler photo has been circulating again online since Gomez-Aspron's induction as mayor. And a parliamentary petition has been launched - which currently has around 1,000 signatures - calling for him to be removed. It describes the decision to make Gomez-Aspron mayor an 'outrage' and labels him a 'bully'. Mystery of Hitler's secret tunnel labyrinth in Poland where 5,000 workers died… and no one knows why it was built It adds: 'His poor conduct as a councillor is disgraceful and how he has gotten away with his behaviour for so long is hard to contemplate and now he has been elected mayor is just plain and simply disgusting.' Gomez-Aspron - who once scooped £100,000 with a pal on TV gameshow Million Pound Drop - last year apologised after comments he made during a full council meeting were reported to the authority's Monitoring Officer. He described a fellow councillor's intention to vote against a council tax rise as having 'diatribe' reasoning and said he has 'not a clue what he is talking about'. In the row, Gomez-Aspron described two independent councillors as the 'Earlestown Brain Trust', and later said that 'it was wrong to imply there was a brain'. The council subsequently confirmed the complaint was upheld and resolved with an 'alternative resolution', with Gomez-Aspron going on to apologise. The council was also forced to apologise in 2015 after Gomez-Aspron allegedly used a euphemism for a derogatory word when speaking to a constituent on Facebook. Gomez-Aspron ended a conversation with a woman on the social network website by writing 'See you next Tuesday'. But, the expression was reportedly abbreviated into text speak, using 'C' and 'U' for the first two words and a capital 'N' at the beginning of the word 'next'. St Helens Council's Standards Committee was told the expression is widely known to be a euphemism for a derogatory four-letter word. Gomez-Aspron denied he knew the expression could be offensive. The councillor was also previously censured by the authority and it was recommended he be removed from its personnel appeals committee, and replaced as armed forces champion, in relation to his alleged comments on social media. In 2017 the council's standards committee found 12 complaints made by residents were in breach of the council's code of conduct in full or in part. A further complaint saw a resident allege Gomez-Aspron had thrown eggs at his house, though a report stated this could not be proven. 'I have matured and learnt' The controversial Hitler snap was taken in 2009 during a fundraiser dinner for a children's charity, with Gomez-Aspron - not then a member of Labour or a councillor - later describing the outfit choice as a 'clumsy' decision. He claimed it was part of a satirical comedy routine he did alongside pals inspired by Mel Brooks' film The Producers - and that others dressed as German soldiers were cropped out of the photo that subsequently went viral. Speaking in 2019 he said: "I have matured and learnt a lot since then, and it goes without saying that I would not do this now. "I know how this could be seen as insensitive and how it could cause hurt and offence. "That was not at all my intention and I sincerely apologise." The photo had originally surfaced while Labour, then led by Jeremy Corbyn, was dogged in an anti-Semitism row. Gomez-Aspron did not wish to comment when approached by The Sun. The Sun understands he is a member of the far-right Homeland Party — which splintered from a neo-Nazi party in 2023. Speaking on YouTube Carr said: 'I am a member of a political party. 'I don't think it's their business or anyone's business to know what that is, but know that it isn't the main political party. 'It isn't Labour.' Carr lost his security clearance and will work from home pending an investigation. Police Scotland declined to comment. 3 Carr serves at HMNB Clyde, Faslane, in Argyll and Bute Credit: Alamy
