Gary Payton questions Luka Doncic's commitment to play defense

Gary Payton questions Luka Doncic's commitment to play defense Many people have criticized Luka Doncic lately for not only his lack of fitness but also his lack of defensive prowess. He has trouble staying in front of his man when the man he's trying to guard has the basketball, and his lack of conditioning may be somewhat to blame. But there is also a feeling among some that perhaps Doncic simply isn't putting enough effort or focus into the defensive end of the floor. He's such a phenomenal offensive player that perhaps he's one of those superstars who simply takes shortcuts on the other end, much like his teammate LeBron James. Back in the 1990s, Gary Payton was one of the NBA's most tenacious defenders, and he earned nine All-Defensive team selections and won the Defensive Player of the Year award during the 1995-96 campaign. At a BUDX NBA House event, he didn't hold back when talking about what Doncic needs to do in order to improve his defense (h/t Fadeaway World). "You have to be dedicated to play defense," Payton said. "You have to be dedicated. Maybe that's not for him. "He's a scorer. He can do it. Now, if he gets his mind to it, I tell every kid that I go and do camps with, I say there's a mindset to play defense. Not just say you want to play defense. You can't do that unless you have a mindset to do that." "You have to have great hands and feet to do that. You have to be able to move. You have to be willing to take sacrifices to do things. And that's just the way it goes. I don't think Luka is a defensive player. I think he's a scorer. He's not one of that. But now, if he wants to, yes, he can get his mind to it to do it. But does he want to do it?" After being traded to the Los Angeles Lakers on Feb. 1, Doncic averaged 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds and 7.5 assists a game. Interestingly, when he was on the court, the Lakers had a 111.5 defensive rating, which was higher than their 113.8 defensive rating for the entire season. With James and Austin Reaves alongside him, and possibly some more defensive help next season if the team addresses its roster needs this summer, Doncic should be able to expend a little more energy on the defensive end, instead of mostly looking to get steals and deflections. It would be one way L.A. can get closer to winning its 18th NBA championship next year.
