Charts show stocks could be in trouble as a new month of trading arrives, says Carter Worth
(Check out Carter's for actionable recommendations and live nightly videos.) The May rally could be in trouble as a new month of trading approaches. The two unfilled up gaps in the S & P 500 SPDR ETF from earlier this spring are "an issue" for the market and will more than likely have to be "answered." A sell-off down to the May 9 unfilled gap (at the 567.50 level) and a filling of said gap would represent a 3.05% decline for the market (from current levels). A drop to the April 23 unfilled gap (at the 529.30 level) and a filling of said gap would represent a 9.56% plunge for the market (from current levels). By our work, both unfilled gaps are "in play" this summer. DISCLOSURES: None. Bulls crushed the volatility and rallied the market back. Carter Worth on what happens next
(Check out Carter's for actionable recommendations and live nightly videos.) The "vol crush" is complete, with the Cboe Volatility Index (VIX) now back down to a level that prevailed just before the stock market's sell-off got underway on February 19 (Tuesday, February 19 th was the day the S & P 500 Index registered its all-time high). A volatility crush is a sudden and sharp decrease in implied volatility – which is the market's expectation of future volatility, leading to a corresponding drop in the prices of options contracts. This typically happens after an event that initially caused a spike in volatility, such as the announcement of prospective aggressive tariffs. As seen in the chart below, the "vol crush" leaves the VIX Index back down "to the penny" to the uptrend line in effect the past 6 months. Our thinking here and now is to anticipate a bounce in the VIX in the day/days ahead — and a corresponding dip in the S & P 500 Index . Reba McEntire's ‘Happy's Place' Concludes Successful First Season
NBCUNIVERSAL EVENTS "NBCUniversal Summer Press Tour "Red Carpet" — Pictured: Reba McEntire, ... More "Happy's Place" in Pasadena, Calif. on July 14, 2024 — (Photo by: Todd Williamson/NBCUniversal via Getty Images) Admit it. You love Reba McEntire. Who doesn't? So, when the news broke last year that McEntire would be tackling the new NBC sitcom Happy's Place, we had high expectations it would succeed. Happy's Place has now officially ended its first 'must see' season. And the stage is set for some potential romance in the sitcom air in season two. Reba McEntire, of course, is known primarily as a legendary country western singer. But there is another Reba, the sitcom star, who can deliver a zinger or two like the best of them. In a setting similar to Cheers in Boston where 'everybody knew you name," the gang at the fictional restaurant/pub at Happy's Place in Knoxille, Tennessee is a comfortable mix. PASADENA, CALIFORNIA - JULY 14: (L-R) Rex Linn, Belissa Escobedo, Pablo Castelblanco, Reba McEntire, ... More Tokala Black Elk, and Melissa Peterman attend the NBCUniversal presentation during the 2024 TCA Summer Press Tour at The Langham Huntington, Pasadena on July 14, 2024 in Pasadena, California. (Photo by) On Happy's Place, the main premise follows McEntire as Bobbie McAllister after she finds out she has a much younger half-sister (Belissa Escobedo as Isabella). Isabella is less than half her age and she owns a share of the bar with Bobbie after their father's death. So, much of season one was spent developing the relationship between this 'odd couple' - one senior and one Generation Z. But there was much more to Happy's Place than the main premise. Former Reba co-stars Melissa Peterman (as Gabby, the needy and dramatic bartender) and Reba McEntire already have proven chemistry, and any scene between the two is a lightning rod for plenty of chuckles. Then there is Happy's Place occupants Steve (Pablo Castelblanco), the accountant who is a major germaphobe, and waiter Takoda (Tokala Black Elk), the voice of reason who can fix anything. By episode 17 of the first season, we witness a more human side to Steve that makes him more than just the eccentricity-themed jokes. But the 'secret sauce' behind the successful first season of Happy's Place was the burgeoning romance between Reba's Bobbie and the gruff (but lovable, of course) cook Emmett (Rex Linn), who is also Reba's real life love interest. More Castelblanco, Tokala Black Elk, "Happy's Place" in Pasadena, Calif. on July 14, 2024 — (Photo by: Trae Patton/NBCUniversal via Getty Images) In the season finale on March 21, Isabella tries to set up Bobbie on a date with Linn's Emmett. The two already flirted with potential feelings earlier in the season, but the pair are worried about ruining their friendship if they take the next step. Will Bobbie and Emmett take the plunge in season two? NEW YORK, NEW YORK - OCTOBER 09: (L-R) Rex Linn and Reba McEntire attend the 2023 Bring Change To ... More Mind Gala at City Winery on October 09, 2023 in New York City. (Photo by) Traditionally, romance in the sitcom world takes time to brew. Remember how long it took for Sam (Ted Danson) and Diane (Shelley Long) and Sam and Rebecca (Kirstie Alley) in that first place where everybody knew your name? Thankfully, there is plenty of time to build the potential relationship of Bobbie and Emmett in season two…and likely behind. And a shout out to Happy's Place for this particularly satisfying, and funny, first season.
