NBL Next Stars standout Alex Toohey announces 2025 NBA draft decision
Australian forward Alex Toohey announced on Tuesday that he will declare for the 2025 NBA draft after playing the last two seasons in the National Basketball League.
Toohey was rewarded this season with the NBL Next Generation Award, given to the top player under 25. He averaged 10.5 points, 3.9 rebounds, 1.5 steals and 1.3 assists on 30.2% shooting from 3-point range in 30 appearances with the Sydney Kings.
The 6-foot-8 standout joined the Kings in June 2023 as part of the Next Stars program, a plan introduced by the NBL to give top prospects a path to play professionally. It has helped the likes of LaMelo Ball, Josh Giddey, AJ Johnson and Alexandre Sarr, among others.
Toohey is considered a potential second-round pick in the draft, given his offensive skill set and reported 6-foot, 11-inch wingspan. He boasts the athleticism that enables him to dazzle in the open court and slash through the paint to get to the rim.
The 20-year-old showed improvement with his 3-point shot this past season after converting 27.3% from beyond the arc in his first year with the Kings. He has a smooth, quick release and can knock it down off the bounce or catch.
Toohey likely showed enough this past season to earn an invitation to the draft combine or G League Elite Camp in May. He will also be able to improve his draft stock in team workouts.
