Hurricanes fall one victory short of a berth in the College World Series after loss at Louisville
In a battle defined by grit and high emotions, the Miami Hurricanes fell to the Louisville Cardinals, 3-2, in Game 3 of the NCAA Louisville Super Regional. The Hurricanes conclude the 2025 season with a 35-27 overall record, including a 15-14 record in Atlantic Coast Conference play, and reached their first Super Regional since 2016. In a tight contest through the early innings, Max Galvin put Miami on the board in style. After freshman Michael Torres singled to left-center on an 0-2 pitch, Galvin blasted a two-run homer down the right-field line, giving the Hurricanes a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Louisville answered in the fourth inning, beginning with a bunt single down the third-base line by Garret Pike. Zion Rose followed with an RBI double down the left-field line, bringing Pike home and cutting Miami's lead in half. Tague Davis then singled to right, advancing Rose to third as the Cardinals threatened with runners on the corners. Bayram Hot tied the score 2-2 with a fielder's-choice RBI, as Rose came home to score. With the score now tied, Miami head coach J.D. Arteaga turned to the bullpen, bringing in left-hander Rob Evans for starter Reese Lumpkin. Evans then retired the next batter to keep the game tied. Louisville threatened again in the fifth, as Moore led off with a single. After a flyout by Klein, Miami made another pitching change, bringing in right-hander Will Smith to try and put the Cardinals' attack to a halt. Moore stole second and walks to Munroe and King Jr. loaded the bases with one out. But Smith remained composed, escaping the jam by striking out Pike before inducing a groundout to third baseman Daniel Cuvet, ending the inning and keeping the score tied at two. But the Cardinals quickly swung the momentum back in their favor after Miami loaded the bases on a single by Galvin and back-to-back walks. The regional hosts escaped the jam with a clutch double play that began with a force at home and ended with Renzo Gonzalez being thrown out at first. Smith responded with authority, striking out the side in order as tension mounted across Jim Patterson Stadium. The Cardinals broke the tie in the seventh when Munroe singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. King Jr. followed with an RBI double to center, scoring Munroe and giving Louisville a 3-2 lead. In the top of the ninth, the Hurricanes threatened with runners on first and second with one out, but came up short as the Cardinals shut the door to seal the win. Canes one victory short of a berth in College World Series after beating Louisville 9-6
The Miami Hurricanes (35-26) edged the Louisville Cardinals (39-22) by a final score of 9-6 in Game 2 of the NCAA Louisville Super Regional on Saturday afternoon. The victory evened the best-of-3 series at one victory apiece. The winner goes to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska. Reliever Carson Fischer (5-1) earned the win after giving up one run in 3 1/3 innings. Closer Brian Walters recorded the final six outs to notch his 11th save of the year. Louisville's Jack Brown (5-5) was tagged with the loss after allowing a go-ahead RBI single in the sixth. Miami struck first in the second inning. Tanner Smith drew a walk after an eight-pitch at-bat, and designated hitter Jake Kulikowski followed with a single through the right side, advancing Smith to third. Freshman Michael Torres then delivered an RBI single to left for the first run of the game. The Cardinals stormed back and answered in the third. Lucas Moore drew a walk and stole second, then Matt Klein advanced Moore to third with a groundout to first, and Zion Rose followed with a game-tying RBI single to center. On the next pitch, Eddie King Jr. launched a two-run homer to left-center, giving the Cardinals a 3-1 lead. After retiring the Hurricanes in order, Louisville added to its lead in the fourth as Jake Munroe belted a solo home run to left, pushing the Cardinals' advantage to 4-1. But Miami was able to fight back, scoring four runs in the fourth inning. Derek Williams reached on a fielding error by the shortstop and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Renzo Gonzalez. After a flyout, Kulikowski ripped an RBI single up the middle to score Williams, which cut the Louisville lead in half, 4-2. Michael Torres followed with a single to center, and Jake Ogden capped the rally with a 411-foot three-run homer to left field, putting the Hurricanes back into the driver's seat, 5-4. Ogden had a monstrous day at the plate, as the Homestead native went 3 for 5 with three RBI, including a momentum-shifting three-run homer in the fourth. Two innings later, King Jr. returned to the plate for the Cardinals and delivered a deep solo home run to tie the score 5-5. In the sixth, Dorian Gonzalez Jr. led off with a double to right and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Williams on the next at-bat. After a Louisville pitching change, Renzo Gonzalez came through with an RBI single through the left side, bringing home Gonzalez Jr. and putting Miami back into the lead, 6-5. Miami found their much-needed insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh, powered by Daniel Cuvet. Torres got the inning going with a single through the left side, and Max Galvin followed with a base hit to right, setting the stage for Cuvet. On a 1-0 pitch, the Fort Lauderdale native turned on a fastball and launched a towering three-run homer over the left-field wall — his 18th of the season. The blast ignited the Hurricanes' dugout and pushed Miami's lead to 9-5, giving Cuvet yet another big moment in a standout sophomore campaign. Louisville chipped away in the top of the eighth. Alex Alicea led off with a double down the right field line, and Lucas Moore followed with an RBI single up the middle to bring the Cardinals within three. Moore stole second and Ryan Klein drew a walk to put two on with no outs, but Miami reliever Brain Walters remained composed, including a flyout to right, a groundout to short, and a flyout to center that helped the Hurricanes escape the jam and secure the victory. Squandered opportunities early cost Hurricanes in Game 1 of Louisville Super Regional
The Miami Hurricanes dropped game one of the NCAA Louisville Super Regional, falling 8-1 Friday at Jim Patterson Stadium in Louisville. A five-run third inning propelled the Cardinals while the Hurricanes struggled to convert early opportunities – stranding eight runners over the first four innings. Miami starter AJ Ciscar (6-2) took the loss after allowing six earned runs on seven hits over 2 1/3 innings. Louisville right-hander Patrick Forbes (4-2) earned the win, striking out nine while surrendering just one earned run on four hits across 5.2 innings. In the top of the second inning, the Hurricanes missed a prime scoring opportunity with the bases loaded and one out after two walks and a hit batter from Louisville starter Patrick Forbes. But Forbes bounced back with a pair of strikeouts to escape the jam unscathed. With momentum shifting to the Cardinals, Louisville responded in the bottom half with back-to-back home runs from Garret Pike and Jake Munroe, giving the Super Regional host a 2-0 lead. In the following inning, Daniel Cuvet was hit by a pitch, Dorian Gonzalez Jr. doubled to right, and Derek Williams worked a walk to load the bases for the second consecutive frame. Senior Renzo Gonzalez followed with a sacrifice fly to left, bringing home Cuvet and trimming Miami's deficit to 2-1. Louisville broke the game open in the fourth inning, capitalizing on a series of miscues and timely hitting. After a leadoff groundout, Gavin Klein doubled down the left field line and Will Rose was intentionally walked. A hit-by-pitch loaded the bases, setting the stage for Louisville's offensive attack. Pike reached on a fielder's choice to the pitcher and advanced to second on a throwing error, which allowed two runs to score. Munroe followed with a three-run homer to left, extending the Cardinals' lead. The inning continued with back-to-back singles from Tague Davis and Kamau Neighbors, prompting a pitching change as AJ Ciscar was relieved by Josh Dorn, who finished the inning. Miami's bullpen limited the damage, allowing just one additional run on a sacrifice fly from Munroe in the fourth. However, the Hurricanes' offensive struggles persisted, finishing 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position and 2-for-16 with runners on base. Miami (34-26) will look to even the series and avoid elimination on Saturday against Louisville at 11 a.m. in a game that will be televised on ESPN.
