Karlyn Pickens sets NCAA softball record for fastest pitch all time No. 7 seed Tennessee (43-15) defeated Nebraska (43-13), 3-2, Saturday in game No. 2 of the NCAA Tournament Knoxville Super Regional at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium. The best-of-three series is tied, 1-1. Nebraska won the super regional opener, 5-2, on Friday. Karlyn Pickens (23-9) started for the Lady Vols and pitched seven innings. She recorded 11 strikeouts and allowed five hits, two runs, one walk and hit one batter. The right-handed pitched totaled 120 pitches, including 73 strikes, against 27 batters. In the first inning, Pickens set a record for the fastest pitch (79.4 mph) in NCAA softball history, breaking her own record of 78.2 mph. Ella Dodge hit a two-run home run for the Lady Vols in the first inning against Nebraska pitcher Jordyn Bahl. Gabby Leach scored Tennessee's other run during the third inning off a sacrifice fly from McKenna Gibson. Friday's contest will mark the eighth meeting between Tennessee and Nebraska. The Lady Vols lead the all time series, 5-2. The Cornhuskers won the last meeting, 7-1, on Feb. 6 in the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Clearwater, Florida. Ahead of Friday's super regional opener, Vols Wire revisits a 2005 contest between Tennessee and Nebraska. Tennessee defeated the Cornhuskers, 5-0, in Las Vegas, Nevada on Feb, 12, 2005. It was the first game contested between the two teams. Monica Abbott pitched a three-hit shutout and recorded seven strikeouts for the Lady Vols. She also made an offensive contribution against Nebraska as she hit a two-run home run in the second inning. It was her only career home run. Abbott is one of the most decorated athletes in Tennessee history. She played for the Lady Vols from 2004-07. Abbott compiled a 189-34 record and recorded 112 shutouts. During her first two seasons at Tennessee, Abbott was a two-way player. She recorded a .243 career batting average and totaled one home run, 15 RBIs, 18 runs and 15 hits, including three doubles.
