NCIS: Origins season 2 preview as creators confirm 'big swings' in hotly anticipated return

Fans are excited for the return of the hit show (Image: CBS via Getty Images) Following the foreboding end to Season 1, creators Gina Lucita Monreal and David J. North have shared some insights into what's next. In a conversation with US Weekly, Gina revealed: "We always had a general idea where we were headed and we did wonder if we wanted to end the episode on the Gibbs [and] Macy story or if we felt it was better to end on the Sandman mystery because that was our other big engine this season. "Ultimately, we felt like the Macy story line had just so much bigger stakes for our characters and emotional stakes for our characters." David highlighted the narrative focus, explaining: "So we decided to end the season-long arc with Sandman first and then get into the Macy's story in the finale." He emphasized the importance of Gibbs and Lala's relationship by stating: "We wanted to tell a sort of against-all-odds love story element to this series. We always broke the season as if we were getting a full season for [the] glass-half-full type of people." Gina elaborated on the timeline of NCIS: Origins, noting that it begins shortly after a tragic period in Gibbs' life, saying: "Viewers can jump in and not be confused and really get on board with our characters and their stories. We've always approached it from that point of view. I feel like we've succeeded." She further stressed the show's adherence to established facts, adding: "We're really keen on sticking to canon [events]. We're strict about that. We want to pay respect to the mothership. We both have written on the mothership and do love that show. But we also love branching out into our new characters and digging into their emotional lives." David hinted at a cliffhanger resolution from Season 1, where Lala's fate was left uncertain after her car accident. He couldn't confirm her survival but assured fans that Season 2 will reveal the outcome. NCIS: Origins will return for a second season "Going into this, we wanted to take big swings. Mariel knew going into this that we were going to take big swings and she was on board for whatever was the best way to make the audience feel something in a truthful way. "I feel like with each one of them, we got a little view into who they are as people - these characters that they're portraying.
